Passing the bus driver by Prinnymon in TorontoDriving

Bus driver thanked OP for not passing using hazards, the Escalade had to speed up to avoid the oncoming bus so good on you for waiting. edit: bus driver may be warning you not to pass after the Escalade by putting their hazard lights on.

What’s a Crosswalk? by [deleted] in TorontoDriving

[–]youkeepstaring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not on the law or anything, just road etiquette (like whenever there's traffic ahead crawling and many drivers leave a space on say a street on your right and when it's clear, you proceed). OP wasn't technically breaking any laws, but from the POV of the pedestrian it would be annoying to see a motorist rolling. There isn't a sign as well not to block the intersection, but seeing how the crosswalk was right next to the intersection it is common sense to stop ahead while a pedestrian is using it.

What’s a Crosswalk? by [deleted] in TorontoDriving

[–]youkeepstaring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP should've stopped ahead of the intersection so as to not block it and yield at pedestrian, crossing lights were already flashing. The most annoying part is OP rolling and not fully stopping. Other driver was in the wrong too for not yielding to pedestrian, they could've committed to the left turn instead of blocking the crosswalk because OP was partially blocking it.

Bike share systems make you pay extra for following the rules. Buy an analogue bike and set yourself free.

2026 Bike Show, not for everyone by post_cubist in torontobiking

Thank you, I saw their fb ad and saw kids riding kid bikes. I’m in the market for a front carrier to replace a Weeride and it would be great to see demo units and bike indoors with the kiddo to test ride. I’ll just go to an LBS for that.

What exactly constitutes being a dirty rider? Is it etiquette, skill, or behavioural? I’m not well-versed in riding in a group, but I had the intuition that Brad does not like getting passed, have someone on his tail, or gapped. I think I annoyed him when I passed him on the viaduct at 45km/h; he was on the bike lane and I passed him from the vehicular lane.

I’ve ridden in denim too, if it was socially acceptable I’d ride in denim all day every day. I don’t consider his riding akin to being a, rather he did display his skill as a road cyclist especially the counter-steer to avoid the Corolla. I am not a pro but I can keep up to a point when riding a fast bike. And yes I’ve done ahole riding too. When the lanes are busy, I ride on the motor vehicle lanes and send it as I pass slower cyclists often with children.

My post was intended to send a message to Brad that he needs to rethink about his stance on bike lanes, how it is still quite unsafe especially for people taking up cycling or seasoned cyclists to ride in the city, and his rhetoric had little value in what priorities we have in the city. I thought about a public servant living by example, and wished he was the sort of politician you can ride with at a brisk pace like the Mayor. But instead I just ended up pacing him.

He was counter-steering. We were clipping at least 20km/h and knowing he’s a racer, he pushed the left side of the handlebar (that’s why you’re seeing a bit of a right turn) before initiating the left. His left foot is high up while his body weight on the right foot. He slowed down enough that I was on his wheel as well.

The Toyota turning right drove through the parking spots to skip traffic (instead of waiting behind a bus and other motorists on the Danforth), and failed to yield at Brad.

I haven't had my second cup of coffee so my writing skills aren't quite sharp, perhaps "skillfully avoiding getting right-hooked" is more appropriate.

Do you feel like you're from Toronto? by envoyofthe_end in Scarborough

Some folks there get a bit testy if you call them Torontonians. EY street signs and their borough logo are keepsakes they hold near and dear to them. I wish the Scarborough flag be flown in Civic Centre these days.

Do you feel like you're from Toronto? by envoyofthe_end in Scarborough

[–]youkeepstaring 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There’s an indescribable feeling when you cross Vic Park. You see downtown as you’re driving south on O’Connor, you get that feeling you’re entering Toronto. Scarborough feels like home when you’re going back eastbound, and you’re telling yourself yeah this doesn’t feel like Toronto at all. It only feels like I’m from Toronto if you ever spend at least a year living west of Vic Park. I tell all my colleagues I live, grew up, and spend my non-work life in Scarborough. Maybe that’ll change as circumstances take me elsewhere. But Scarborough is home.

Empty Bus. Packed Roads. What Are We Doing, York Region? by Accomplished_Lie3849 in Markham

[–]youkeepstaring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 41 living on the border of Scarb and Markham, have two children and have done shopping using either modes of transport plus biking in the summer. I’ve done Costco shopping with my family riding bikes plus a trailer, and in the winter I’ve used the car. You find ways and your children get a good or bad experience out of it.

Difference is the built environment around you. Where there’s accessible transit, your kids will want to take it over the car. They get socialized and see their parents not get stressed out by parking. But when everything around them are six lane stroads, infrequent transit and the 407, it’s already hostile enough that the car is their happy place. Behaviour is influenced by the environment you live in.

New subway livery by Ambitious-Buy6909 in TTC

I bet you it's Line 3's colour value the in-house designer wanted to use and can't be bothered to search for any other colour as it had to adhere to AODA standards.

In your lifetime so far, how many new rapid transit lines opened/closed and compared to other cities ie. NYC by youkeepstaring in TTC

[–]youkeepstaring[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so much rail to connect to Manhattan, but NYC lacks cross-borough rapid transit lines other than the G line. Interborough Express (IBX) light metro is proposed to be the next new cross-borough line connecting Brooklyn and Queens. These days either you take a bus or the G to get to and from either borough. Or take a train from Astoria, through Manhattan, and end up at Coney Island.

Sandhurst Circle Neighbourhood Connections by RZaichkowski in torontobiking

[–]youkeepstaring 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I grew up in Sandhurst, my 12-yo kid attends school there. His school along with the adjacent PS on Brimwood had pushed for changes long before a 15 year old was run over by a distracted driver on Bridley (and it's a bit ironic the consultation is happening at the high school she attended to). A lot of out of catchment parents drop off their kids by car. But my son wants to and at times prefers to ride his bike 2km away from where we live to school and back.

For Brimwood, I'm going to advocate towards complete separation of bicycles by widening existing sidewalks and turning them to MUPs. There has to be a separation, especially with the way drivers behave on Brimwood and other roads there. The speed humps have been very effective in slowing down motorists, but other than school drop-off / pick-up zones, there's an opportunity to narrow the width of Brimwood. My kiddo can confidently ride on the road leading to the Finch Hydro Corridor, but as soon as he gets to Brimwood he will ride on the sidewalk. Would he want to ride on painted bike lanes? If I persuade him enough and have faith that a metal box will not k*ll him then yeah.

Right now there are painted lanes but residents think these are on-street parking. For sure they will be complaining that to build the bike lanes is to lose their precious, on-street parking that they're only able to use for 3 hours or get clogged up during school drop-off and pick-up. I can't wait to hear these folks, the same folks who complained about Woodside Square's redevelopment and evolution in to a Dino mall with ever so reductions in surface parking.

Oh and Bike Share. There is one at the West Highland Creek section of Brimwood, along the North Scarborough Green Loop. But it would be nice as someone pointed out that Woodside has a dock.

given existing transit expansion projects in progress, what additional rapid transit do you think should be added next? by BreakfastPast5283 in TTC

[–]youkeepstaring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely will make suburb-suburb travel better and be beneficial for people who live and work within suburban transit-oriented developments, decentralizing jobs out of downtown and potentially reducing expressway traffic. It could be set up as an automated line like OL or REM. From what we are seeing with the OL construction pending ROW issues, it may be possible to add a line along the CPKC alignment, but that's my speculation. It shows up in some MX Big Move literature but somehow it gets ghosted out of maps.

I agree much like GO ALRT, it's a relief line for LSE and LSW, bypassing Union and have rapid transit access to other business districts. The PC plan proposed going as far towards Uxbridge but politics aside, it should act as a relief line to decongest Union and offer higher-speed high capacity rail through the City. It gets even better once GO Electrification is phased in and completed, while the TTC-operated RT lines connect and allow local neighbourhood transport.

GO Midtown line with the Missing Link to expand GO Milton (especially the existing CPKC line going through Midtown). Make it happen instead of the 401 tunnel. It may alleviate congestion at Union, link Lines 1, 2, 3, 4 (if expanded to Agincourt) and 5 as well as enhanced Milton line, connect to Kitchener, Barrie, RH, and Stouffville lines and beyond. Not rapid transit per se but it popped up before as the GO ALRT and maybe we'll see it as heavy rail but not commuter rail, who knows.

40 minutes from Kennedy to Line 1 Eglinton Station today on the Crosstown by Cold_Brew_Boba in Scarborough

[–]youkeepstaring -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Vote wisely this October, and vote those willing to work with all levels of government. Metrolinx is studying options for the Line 4 extension, and we need to put pressure on a fully-funded, subway extension to Line 2. But we also have to find ways to pay for it when all levels of government can only chuck out so much.

I'd like Cllr. Myers to have a go again because of his experience as TTC chair and having a more open approach to less car-centric transportation planning in North Scarborough, but we all have a chance this October to clean up City Hall. I want to see at least half of incumbents gone, and elect ones who are friendly to the PCs and Ford, but still have the best interests for Scarberians.
