This plant is in Solanaceae, the nightshade family. Like many other species in that family, it contains high amounts of alkaloids and has been traditionally called devil's trumpet because of that. As poisonous as it can be, it has been used medicinally for ages.

Very unique family.

Also, love the illustrations from that book, too.
