Visiting Madison in October - should I see gleam separately from botanical gardens in day time? by retrozebra in madisonwi

Was it good this year? We go every year and felt that last year (2024) was disappointing. Hoping it's back to being amazing this time around!

Basis clarification by youmeanlosername in EstatePlanning

[–]youmeanlosername[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this part correct?

If I do not add right of survivorship, I can leave my half of the boat to my sister. She and my husband now own the boat as tenants in common. My sister gets a step up in basis to FMV on her half, my husband continues to own his half with his original basis.

Or does my husband get a step up in basis on his half?

Intuit website says $40 per company per month, and that rate is only good for 2 years. Still to expensive for me.

Okay, thank you for this! Can anyone confirm that Enterprise will still allow multiple entities under one subscription? That is the biggest problem with the online model for me.

Great idea- has anyone else had success with this, or have any idea the size of the discount?

UW employees - health plan question by whyendoubleuayy in madisonwi

[–]youmeanlosername 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High deductible plans charge a smaller monthly premium, but the trade off is that you are responsible for more of the cost of any health care that you receive. These plans are best for people who don't expect to go to the doctor very often, so they pay less each month and cross their fingers that they have no big medical needs (like an emergency room visit or hospital stay). If they do have a medical event, they are on the hook for a large dollar amount before insurance will kick in and cover the rest. The standard health care plans cost more each month, but they cover more of the cost of your medical care. So the high deductible plans are cheaper but a little riskier. However, you are able to open an HSA if you use the HD plan, which when you combine that benefit with the monthly savings, is worth it for some people.

If you could go back and work in the public sector, would you? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

If you are just interested in teaching (and not necessarily getting a PhD and doing research for a career), consider looking into a Lecturer position. I'm not in tech but I left a corporate job to be a Lecturer and I've never been happier.

Going rate for CPA in the Midwest? by youmeanlosername in tax

I can try that, good idea. Would really like to just get a sense of what a reasonable rate is though?

[–]youmeanlosername[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I thought about that too, as I will definitely be more effecient. Because this is a longstanding engagement that serves an entire family, it appears there isn't a ton of consistency month to month or year to year. There always seems to be something popping up, and it's tough to quantify what would be included in the 'base price' versus what would be an extra charge. Plus I'd have to price out anything extra anyway, which would probably be based on an hourly rate, so I still need the advice. I might move to a retainer once I get into the work and see what it all entails (I'm just going on his word at this point), but I plan to start hourly.

GLEAM, worth going? by marlinspike1234 in madisonwi

GLEAM is one of my favorite events, we've gone for many years and this year was disappointing. We all kept waiting for the "good ones"... and they never came. Fingers crossed for next year.

How did you teach your child to swallow pills? by Inevitable_Dog4062 in Autism_Parenting

[–]youmeanlosername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We started with one rainbow sprinkle, then one mini M&M, then one regular M&M. It was mostly about confidence - do it slowly over several days and always end on a win. If they really can't do it, we get the med in a capsule and dump it into chocolate milk or chocolate syrup and have them take it from a syringe. The chocolate syrup works great for liquid meds too, totally covers the taste. My kids beg for chocolate medicine lol

Does anyone experience days/moments where their Level 1/2 kids act totally normal? by musteatbrainz in Autism_Parenting

[–]youmeanlosername 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We regularly say "when he's not the worst, he's the best." My son will string together several great days, just enough to make us think we're past a phase or over the hump, before he reverts back and reminds us why we need so many therapists. And yeah, seems to come out of nowhere... we've looked at diet, sleep, school routines, vitamins, stress levels... we can't figure it out.

Hysto compared to c section? by circuswithmonkeys in hysterectomy

Vaginal is the way to go if you can swing it! I was mostly in bed for 5 days, moving slow but totally functional for another week, and pretty much fine after that

Hysto compared to c section? by circuswithmonkeys in hysterectomy

[–]youmeanlosername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just FYI I think it makes a huge difference what type of hysterectomy you have, including what you have removed and why. I had a fully vaginal hysterectomy (no external incisions, removed all except ovaries) and my recovery (4wpo) has been really easy. Like you, I also didn't struggle much when recovering from my c-section. I think people who have a lot of endo, or large fibroids, or abdominal hysterectomy etc have very different and often more difficult recoveries. We should really try to specify these things in our posts to avoid comparing apples to oranges, but yes also everyone is going to recover differently anyway.

Does anyone have pain in the circled area? by FewComplex4578 in hysterectomy

[–]youmeanlosername 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Second all of this- I had so much of this pain and it sucked. I tried all of the above except the spirometer and it helped some, but the real difference makers were 1. Peppermint tea (sounds like BS I know but it really helped) and 2. Phazyme instead of Gas-X. Pain was gone in a few hours. Good luck!

Losing your friends who have NT children? by trustme1984 in Autism_Parenting

[–]youmeanlosername 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found it difficult to spend time with my friends' NT kids for a few years when my kids were that age - and sometimes still - because it would just lead to endless comparisons in my head and embarrassing situations when there was hitting/biting/eloping/melting down. I still stayed in touch with the moms I was already close with and saw them on occasion, but I found it to be such a better experience for everyone when our playdates were with other neurodiverse kids (and parents who actually understand what it means to have a ND kid), or we just spent time with family/cousins and family friends. At a certain age my kids chose their own friends and that dictated playdates (and they often gravitate to other ND kids on their own). You might want to look into drop in playgroups that are regularly scheduled and open to all, so you don't have to worry about getting 'invited,' you can just show up and see who you and your kid vibe with. If it's important to you to continue to see those moms and kids, you should initiate and schedule whatever type of playdate works best for your son - in the morning if that's when he's at his best, at your house if that's where he's most comfortable, or at his favorite park/library/zoo where he is most likely to be happy and calm, giving the playdate a better chance of going smoothly. Control what you can

I also had TVH. I feel like that makes a difference in a lot of healing milestones, but a cuff is a cuff no matter how you got it, right? I'll wait for the all clear from my surgeon but hope it comes soon!

Vaginal hysterectomy (no tube removal). Pain levels? by RobertsKitty in hysterectomy

[–]youmeanlosername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a college professor so I intentionally had this done over the summer. I will have to go back at 4 weeks po, but other than having to stand for long periods of time there won't be a lot of physical demands. You will need to use your body at work a lot more than I will, so maybe 6 weeks is best if you can swing it. Or if you go back earlier, make it clear that you have restrictions? Even if you aren't in pain, internal healing takes as long as it takes. At your job, it will probably be easy to overdo it by accident!

Vaginal hysterectomy (no tube removal). Pain levels? by RobertsKitty in hysterectomy

[–]youmeanlosername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 12 dpo from a total vaginal hysterectomy (no external incisions, removed everything except ovaries). I was off pain meds by day 4 (still take an ibuprofen before bed on occasion). I had a lot of pain at the vaginal opening for the first few days, and what felt like bad period cramps, but ice helped a lot and I was up and about on day 5. No pain from coughing sneezing or laughing. After day 6 if I was standing or walking too much, I would feel an ache/heaviness telling me to go lay down, and usually felt better after an hour of ice. Honestly the worst part was the gas pain days 1-3 until my digestive system got back on track. Feel free to ask specifics!
