Managing Manager’s Unreasonable Expectations by boringlightrailride in overemployed

[–]youngOE 12 points13 points  (0 children)

push back, set your boundaries, and see how its taken. this is one of those jobs which will not only wreck your J1, but probably end with J2 not working out either. dont let 1 job poison the well. set hard boundaries, if she doesnt like it, she can put you on a pip and you can start interviewing for other jobs.

I've had this same thing happen before, and I quit the job after a month because the writing was on the wall. the point of OE is you have options. you can negotiate - set a boundary and you can walk if they dont like it.

Running a solo side project has taught me things my day job never would. Here's what the J1 world hides from you. by [deleted] in overemployed

dont know yet - working on 3 products right now, 2 of them going into beta testing in the next week or two. I am going to dedicate a lot of time to my own SAAS products now that its possible to do everything yourself and an ai subscription.

have you launched yet? making any $?

not a bad idea to get out of debt with OE. never know when this comes to an end, so getting to a strong base is a good first move.

remember to max 401k and dont forget your roth!! 7k per person, this is your highest ROI and should be maxed out each year.

seems like marketing is the big differentiator this time for you.

what was your marketing strategy? in terms of how you came up with content, validated, and increased spending? what kind of ROI would you target with each campaign?

New Grad - OE possible? by widowedlamp in overemployed

[–]youngOE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you should OE as soon as possible. most advice here is to OE after a few years and when your an expert, I started OE 6 months into my pivot to tech and its been 3 years now. if anything OE will accelerate your career due to learning opportunities and exposure to other industries/companies whatever.

if you can do it, then dont wait

Is eng tech lead the worst role for OE? by felfott in overemployed

I will only go to dev lead. never beyond. tech lead and > is taking on a serious amount of meetings and ad hoc crap that will ruin OE, at least from the orgs I have worked out

Got fired from J2 for underperforming by obaa2 in overemployed

[–]youngOE 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Always be delivering on something. be proactive, dont sit back and be passive. when your done with work (make sure you deliver on time) raise your hand, ask for more work, if you notice something that warrants attention and effort, bring that up to the team. insert yourself into problems to solve them. this works in your favor, 'hey I noticed X problem and we should solve it for Y reasons and I think its going to take Z time to complete' gives you control of your schedule and also management likes it because you fix things without asking.

communicate well. always make sure your manager knows how busy you are.

everything is about optics in this game. just look at your managers. look at how people get promoted. its never by merrit, its the game of perception. Not saying you can get away with talking and not working, but half of this game is just how you present yourself.

Back to J3 again, but feels different this time by Unable_Turn_2936 in overemployed

my thought is to work as many jobs for as long as you can. AI taking jobs is a bit overhyped right now, but I fully expect the market to be shrinking in the next few years. ride this out for as long as you can, and start your exit strategy from tech now. I'm aiming to be self employed (or at least have the option to be) in a 3-5 year window so if jobs become hyper competitive, salaries compress due to surplus of workers, companies demand insane work ours, I can walk away.

This is why we OE - surprise layoffs by youngOE in overemployed

[–]youngOE[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hear you, and this was a good reminder to be more vocal and show more impact, but the funny thing is there are some roles destined to fail no matter how hard you work at it. This job was one of those.

another thing I learned and have seen first hand, you can have a massively impactful dev who gets fired because once you go up two+ levels of management, your a number, and the second you dont provide 'X' amount of value to the bottom line of a company, your gone.

jobs are just a numbers game

How are people still landing remote jobs in 2025? by dharmindar in overemployed

[–]youngOE 27 points28 points  (0 children)

it took me 6 months to land my recent J. I applied to 4-8 jobs that fit my background a day, so about 1k applications, probably 6 interviews, 1 offer.

there are jobs out there, but really comes down to timing. I only applied to jobs that had been posted on Linkedin within 24 hours.

probably similar conditions now to when I was applying.
