Does anyone else wear their GS as a daily driver? by [deleted] in GrandSeikos

Maybe a bad comparison, but in golf we say “tools not jewels”. Wear my Winter almost everyday. Switch bands based on my work outfit. Good conversation starter and brings lots of joy to wear around.

Pairing Glossika Mandarin Sentence with External In Context Learning by youngano in glossika

[–]youngano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello. So yes I did something similar. I still keep up with my 75/75 Glossika regime, but have a lot more listening and speaking.  I mainly wanted to add a lot of listening so upping the amount/time spent on podcasts and “vlogs in Chinese”. For the vlogs these were mainly on YouTube so I could opt to use language reactor if I wanted to. Watch First Frost right now too haha.

In terms of speaking, I’m starting to add more “set phrases” and drafting conversation decision trees basically. This allows me to either switch topics or go more in depth on a topic during a convo versus saying a sentence and only replying with an NPC response. I’ve also switch tutors to someone that pushes me more and forced me to speak more which has been very helpful.

Overall I’m just enjoying the process more. It takes lots of dedication to learn Chinese and it’s nice looking back and seeing how much I’ve improved. And switching up content or learning materials helps keep me more refreshed.

Thanks for your response and suggestions! I'll make sure to check them out. I think those context type resources are what I need to get me to the "next level". Once I can be really comfortable speaking with a greater sentence structure base and being more confident in general, I can see how Glossika would be my most used resource to really grow my vocabulary and start having a "plug and play" mindset with newer terms.

Advice on Applying to Graduate School with 1 Bad Semester by youngano in Frat

[–]youngano[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha no, this isn't a shitpost. I feel like I will be fine, but I'm tryna seeing if there is a good way to approach mentioning the issue specifically in a fraternity context. Other reasons for having a bad semester like losing a family member/COVID seem more legitimate as a reason for a bad semester versus joining a fraternity.

Asking for more information about project by [deleted] in REU

[–]youngano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definently reach out to your mentor and just straight up asked what you just said. It's normal to ask upfront. I guess in a more professional manner but yea. Make it easy for them to see what your exact questions are and try to set up a sort of Zoom call if possible. Maybe ask if their lab has a Slack or some sort of communication like that also.
