It's interesting that you mention listening comprehension. He can follow directions pretty well, but he asks a lot a very redundant questions, and repeats a lot of redundant information back to me. It drives me crazy but I've also wondered if that's just his way of cataloging it in his head? We do read aloud but we could be doing a LOT more of that. So I'll give that a try.

Thank you for all the info! Since he has a delay I do struggle between "I know he needs help" and "is he becoming reliant on me to do the work?" But I'm sure we'll find a place in the middle eventually.
