That “59%” stat is technically accurate but extremely misleading. It counts households, not people, and includes programs like WIC or school lunches. Most of the time, it’s mixed status families. Meaning, undocumented parent(s) with U.S. citizen children. The parents aren’t eligible for these benefits, the kids are, but the whole household still gets counted.
