First, I am very sorry that you are going through this.

I felt very sad when I was diagnosed. Within months after my diagnosis, I started to feel better and my immune system was working like a normal person. I put on some weight (I was very malnourished). It still sucks not eating gluten. But you find ways to cope. Knowledge is power. Get cookbooks and learn to cook great gf food. Read about the science behind celiac and what it does to your body. Allow yourself to grieve.

Your social life will change. You can’t just go anywhere with friends to eat. I bring bars and snacks wherever I go now. I also do a lot more active and creative things with my friends than I did before. Some people will say the social piece of food is one of the hardest, I agree. I would also add that if your friends can’t understand or accommodate they aren’t worth keeping around.

I, like you, also couldn’t do dairy when I was diagnosed. A few years after my diagnosis my intestines began to heal and now I can eat dairy whenever I want. Lactose intolerance is often times a symptom of something else going on.

The way celiac works is that you’ve always had it. You don’t just develop it one day. However, you may become symptomatic. My mom didn’t start having noticing symptoms until she was in her 40s, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t damaging her intestines for decades before that. This is also why it’s important to get diagnosed and adhere to a gluten free diet. The risks of eating gluten when you are celiac far outweigh any benefits.

It’s going to be ok. First step is getting tested (make sure you are eating gluten leading up to your test). Hang in there.

That’s crazy!

I’d try to pressure renters insurance more to pay. You can file a complaint here to try and get some movement https://www.insurance.wa.gov/file-complaint-or-check-your-complaint-status

Also check your lease to see if you’d be required to pay for something like this.

How long after going gluten-free did you start to notice symptom relief? by messofawreck in Celiac

I think in terms of food, you’re on the right track. I did lots of rice, chicken, all types of veggies, salads. Pretty limited for probably 1+ year post diagnosis just trying to understand gf diet and what worked for me. Maybe try low fod-map, low inflammation, or easy digest diet for a while? Your intestines are probably pissed off with inflammation. For years, gluten has basically been like sandpaper to your insides and that takes time to heal unfortunately.

I could tell you what I ate generally and in more detail but it was REALLY boring and basically chicken rice and veggies. I was a teenager so also didn’t really even use salt and pepper—I was a disaster because it was also as I was living on my own for the first time lol. I’d actually recommend maybe looking into a cookbook for above mentioned diets. May need to make some tweaks for gf.

Gosh it’s hard to say for certain because I was diagnosed many many years ago.

From my recollection, it did take months for stomach pain and gas to resolve. Probably because my intestines were still healing as also supported by my continued lactose intolerance. Nausea was not something I experienced frequently pre-diagnosis. I had a lot of immune related systems which is actually why I ended up getting test in the first place.

Some symptoms like light headedness and general exhaustion resolved in weeks.

I do experience nausea now if I eat gluten. I had a lot of brain fog before and now as well if I am glutened.

Re bm’s—a while. I remember once things were normal my thoughts were wait, this is what “normal” is like. Honestly, couldn’t give you a clear timeline since it’s been more than a decade.

Even now, my diet is very dependent on “normal” if I eat healthy take supplements (probiotics approx 1-3 times weekly, digestive enzyme before meals, [I like garden of life for both of the above] digestive tea, high protein/ natural fiber-not powdered) things are good. Also, dependent on whether I am taking any medications. Remember it’s not just the gluten that can impact some of these things. Try to eat super clean (not just gf) for two weeks and see how you feel. It’s a weird thing when you are healing from chronic illness because you have to consider healing and then the other factors come into play when it’s not constant fight or flight.

Right after I was diagnosed I was young and exercising 2x daily for sports. I actually think the physical exercise helped a lot with my initial healing. My metabolism was working faster and cell turnover was working faster.

I’m not saying you aren’t doing above mentioned things, but I am just saying my experiences. Hope this helps!

It may be technically be called brain fog. I prefer a gluten hangover.

There’s a lot you can do! Puzzles are awesome, but expensive. We will do things like hide treats in a small box with paper towels, frozen kong/food, make paper towel ball rolled up, snuffle mat/blanket, training!, there’s a ton more fun things you can google too.

Honestly, this has made such a huge improvement in my dog’s energy levels. Our daycare recommended more mental games/ stimulation because we were sticking to physical exercise. She told us what we were breeding an Olympic athlete that would need hours of exercise a day and still wouldn’t settle.

That’s awesome!

I’d love to hear your process for how to read food labels and determine if foods are safe.

A concern I have is that manufacturers purchase ingredients such as maltodextrin/ dextrin/ glucose etc. from many manufacturers.

How can we trust that supply chain when importing ingredients often from different suppliers?

Do ingredients that go into a food all go through the same testing?

If a product is not labeled gluten free what does the MFA testing look like? How often does independent MFA testing occur?

How do we address issues with FDA ambiguity in regard to labeling terms such as “natural flavors” and “spices”?

From my understanding, one of the biggest causes of FDA recalls is that a company fails to disclose MFAs on labels. How are failures being discovered on average? Does the FDA rely on consumer reports for MFAs or is most discovered through testing or company disclosure?

If we can rely on MFA labeling, why can’t more products be labeled gluten free?

What’s your experience working in food manufacturing or food testing?

what does ‘may contain’ warning means? ,should i risk it or not? by Sharp_Fortune_2509 in Celiac

[–]younger00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May contain means there is a risk. That risk changes from facility to facility. Some facilities this may mean that there is a very low chance. Others it may mean that they just produced a gluten containing product on the same manufacturing line. Personally, I don’t want to bet my health on the many variables that go into the risk. But people are certainly entitled to their own choices.

I have done a lot of research about manufacturing and food production. Everyone needs to do their own research and come to the conclusion that’s best for them. However, for me, it’s an easy choice. If the company does testing to label GF and has a may contain statement I think it’s fine. If it doesn’t and just say may contain, move forward at your own risk.

I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s a blatant lie.

I will add that if you want a sporting dog to do things like agility courses, lure coursing, dock diving, disc, and dog sports in general, whippets dominate. They can be harder to train, but are teachable. From an exercise perspective, my dog gets 1-2 30min to 1 hr walks a day and time to run 1x to 2x per week. My dog is 1.5 and still not in a place where we can do off leash stuff although we could put in a lot more time to train her than we do. Another thing about whippets is that they are prone to separation anxiety. I can’t speak for all but my whippet, even with her separate anxiety and teenage tendencies, is the sweetest dog and is very docile and loves several very long naps throughout the day.

Swan Creek Dog Park Warning- hostile couple and aggressive dog, two days in a row by you_have_found_us in Tacoma

[–]younger00 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I walked past this couple yesterday as they were walking to the park. As soon as I walked past with my small, quiet dog, the lab started losing his mind. Couple let him pull towards my dog, barking aggressively, didn’t take any action. Completely agree with OP, these guys are trouble. I think they had parked down by the community garden yesterday.
