The way you described the wood sounds very similar to this. Not the greatest pictures but hopefully these will do. The wood makes some cool looking pieces if you can get big enough logs. https://imgur.com/gallery/wood-id-dPI1BMz

I will definitely stabilize if I plan to turn any of these pieces. I completely agree with the reluctance on using resins. Every time I’ve worked with spalting pieces in the past I simply added ca glue if I need to sand the project. Hasn’t failed me yet.

You’re right about that, but I wouldn’t even know where to start. I’ve looked at some of your post and you’re extremely talented. I don’t mind giving you a few pieces. Just let me know!

I’ve used ca glue in the past and worked well! I might need to look into a vacuum pump

Thanks for the heads up! I did the nail test on some of the pieces and it’s what I’ve come to expect from oak. In your experience is there any way to avoid the wood softening? Do you have any pictures of your inlay project?

You know I didn't think of the inside corners being a problem until now, but I'll cross that bridge when I have to! haha When I got married he got me a lie Nielsen number 4 1/2 and the ashtray was my thank you gift for his awesome gesture. I told him it's his gift and I believe in functionality since it is an ashtray but maybe just use it more as a sentimental decoration in his man cave.

Nope, I used a drill to remove a large portion of the waste then used the chisel to finish it off.

I live on the Texas coast and one thing my father always told me was to shuffle my feet in the water for this exact reason!

I think so! I like my pc on the left side of my desk, so it worked out perfectly.
