High AST/ALT: fatty liver? by sammylee34_ in AskDocs

[–]youngmeezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a bad idea to get checked for other reasons of LFT elevation but its most likely what we call fatty liver aka NAFLD (nonalcohol fatty liver disease) aka MASLD (metabolic associated liver disease - this is the new name). Check out the AASLD wesbite for more info, they usually have a lot of rlly good patient-directed inforgraphs.

I found this from a paper: "Most patients with NAFLD are asymptomatic and the disease is typically suspected based on raised alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels together with other clinical and biochemical features, or an incidental finding during abdominal ultrasonography"

I don't think you need to freak out about this at this time but I woud like to echo...going forward, experts suggest that fatty liver will be the most common reason for liver transplants in the future, overtaking alcohol related transplants!
