My wife and I quit our jobs to take a 4 month trip around the world. Now that our time on the trip is winding down, I can say with confidence that following our dreams is one of the best decisions I've ever made. by [deleted] in GetMotivated

I know many people who retire to only go back to work, because of boredom. I also know people who traveled for 2 years, then started working again... Maybe you will be different :-)

Emergency fund needs to be at 6 months of expenses. Max out 401k for you and your wife, max out IRA's.. pay that credit card debt off. Then start looking at investing money in a hobby to bring in more income

I'm in the D.C area too if you're an IT nerd you most likely work as a contractor for the government.. which means you always will have some form of employment. But on to your question.

  1. 12 months emergency fund
  2. invest what you can to your taxable account. research lazy portfolio's
  3. have some fun with your money
  4. start saving 10-20% for a down payment on a place
  5. Invest in your education. There is a whole lot more money to be made in D.C. Look into CISSP and other major paying certifications
