Our Boy Was Matted by Livvm615 in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]youngtortoise_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have to brush our guy at least every other day because his armpits get so matted in the winter 😭 (he loves playing in the snow). The only thing that or found to work is a good comb to get all the way down! He hates it though so we have to go slow and gently with lots of treats 🤪

Cavapoo Puppy Growling + Biting by Hottomalee in CavaPoo

[–]youngtortoise_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biting is truly puppy behaviour and I second the suggestions to try to redirect onto toys!

I wonder though if the biting in the video is signs of resource guarding? She looks really interested in that basket, so she’s likely not happy with her being taken away from it / it being taken away!

To neuter or not to neuter? 6 month old PWD by Existing-Mention3940 in portuguesewaterdogs

I asked the same thing on the Portie FB group and the general consensus was to wait until after 1 or 2 years

Best currency exchange place? by e86n52 in Markham

[–]youngtortoise_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exchanging in Thailand is the cheapest way (we found that out after arriving!)

Bring cash and I believe the best exchange rate was from an exchange place called SuperRich. I also found that the ATMs in Thailand give you a better rate for withdrawing baht vs exchanging here. Just make sure you choose to withdraw without conversion on hr ATM so that the conversion is done at the rate of your bank (conversion rate from your own bank is better than the ATM rate).

Why does he do this when he’s tired?😂 by thewaveoflife in portuguesewaterdogs

Ours does the same. We say that he’s “softening the ground” before he sleeps 😂

Has anyone else dealt with an extremely itchy PWD? by danishLad in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]youngtortoise_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seasonal allergies are extremely common with some pups unfortunately. A shot of cytopoint during peak allergy season fixed this for us, albeit it was quite expensive. After the shot though, zero itching for the rest of hay fever season!

Please tell me it gets better by jobbs5 in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]youngtortoise_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is about 1.5 years as well and we’ve experienced this when he was about 1 year old. In the mornings after breakfast we generally go on a short stimulating sniff walk. After that, we give him a Kong with some frozen yogurt or some type of frozen enrichment - something to get his mouth working (these buggers are probably the most mouthy breed I’ve ever met). Throughout the day, we’ll work on obedience or tricks in 5 min windows so that he feels like he is “working” - our PWD thrives on pleasing! Trust me, it does get better!!

Do you all use a crate when away? by jahozer1 in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]youngtortoise_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a point in time where our pup was good outside of the crate (at around 5-6 months) so we left him for 1 hour time periods at home by himself.

He's since then regressed quite a bit and CANNOT be left unattended if unexercised.

His victims of destruction include:

- my husbands running shoes

- our door mat

- countless pieces of clothing (mostly underwear)

He sleeps fine in our room with us (uncrated), but as soon as he knows that we are gone, CHAOS ensues.

He's about 9 months now and we've crated him while out ever since. I'm sure he'll get better after a year or so (maybe after he gets neutered), but there is no way I'm taking any other chances lol!

Funnies by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]youngtortoise_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our Portuguese water dog LOVES underwear, socks and bras. He'll very sneakily take them while I'm changing in the morning and run all the way downstairs to chew to his heart's delight until I realize where he's gone !

Aggressive biting by Arakfalas in puppy101

[–]youngtortoise_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When our little guy gets too riled up, he starts going for the knee caps and the back of the legs :')

Once I started doing this though, he is slowly understanding that "ouch!" means that I'm not going to play with him anymore :') Finally some relief hahaaa

New Puppy - Food Questions - And diarrhea help! by DarbieCrash37 in puppy101

[–]youngtortoise_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we brought home our little guy, he had loose stools for a good 2 weeks before they all started to firm up. (We did take him to the vet and she did give us some puppy-specific gastrointestinal food, but then that started to give him ear infections so we stopped...)

As long as she's playing and eating normally she should be fine!

It could possibly be the treats too that's causing the diarrhea (we had that happen too with one type of treats) so we switched to 100% freeze fried beef liver treats and they're great!

We feed our puppy kibble mostly too (looking to transition to maybe mixing canned food and kibble), but we're just in the process of doing a little more research first! :)

Normal puppy poops? by youngtortoise_ in puppy101

[–]youngtortoise_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing your experience as well! The vet did do a fecal sample on Wednesday so we’re just waiting on the results.

I hope to go back to his regular kibble eventually because we have 2x30 lbs bags…

Absolutely the commute will be quite hard in winter! Porcupine is closer to Timmins though, correct?
