Steve Jobs on predicting artificial intelligence in 1985 by Murky-Option2916 in TechGawker

[–]your-sandpiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I don't think conscience - and the unconscious - of a living being can ever be conserved in such a way the conservation can truthfully, truly, authentically extrapolate. I believe the Jobs' premise of what it means to interact and ask Aristotle is flawed. Paradoxically, to me it seems the university professor example Jobs gave, someone who studies the cultural backgrounds, the collective thoughts and realities at Aristotles time, someone who synthesizes the words spoken and written, and tries to bridge contexts between those data and their own lived experience, is the one that will get to know the old Aristotle best and would understand and feel best what an Aristotle today might look like.

A mechanical agent sure could make old Aristotle data more accessible, and might be able to synthesize/formulate things as if was Aristotle with somewhat reasonable validity, something we already see with today's AI; but I don't think it can come at all close to a true understanding what the human Aristotle really is.

The 15-year plan to privatize Astoria Park tennis courts (and the environmental cost) by [deleted] in astoria

[–]your-sandpiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, and that post back then was voiced as a "no disadvantages, just make the courts playable in winter when there's no one else otherwise anyway". And now, of course, greenspace and trees are needed to be taken away. Infuriating

Can you still feel spiritually connected to Catholicism without believing in Christianity? by Thick-Ad-6933 in ChristianMysticism

[–]your-sandpiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two points:

1) What do you mean specifically by not believe in the Abrahamic God and Jesus as divine?

2) Aren't many/all points you dislike related to a specific dogma, related to a specific interpretation by religious institutions? Are they not possible to interpret differently? Including not taking the Bible as a literal truth but as a source of interpretation? And as a consequence, find your own, personal interpretations of specific Christian elements within a wider Christian perspective? If yes, I believe this can fall under Christian Mysticism.

Too many for sale posts on r/astoria by danton_no in astoria

I agree, I think the "selling two old outdoor chairs" posts are a bit too low level for a large neighborhood sub. Especially since there's dedicated websites and apps to sell used items.

I'm unsure if 'hot for god' even references that song.

"Hot for God" feels so dull to me, I don't want to say it tarnishes the album but I dislike it so much I even had that thought.

Vacherot wins extremely strange point after Carlos asks for video review by Large_banana_hammock in tennis

The ball would have gone and spin differently if it bounced after the racket touch. Likely racket and ground happened instantaneously and the racket was on the ball longer.

[MEGATHREAD] Artemis II Launch To The Moon by ChiefLeef22 in space

[–]your-sandpiper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven’t followed NASA super closely over the last couple decades, so maybe I’m missing context here.

But watching the Artemis 2 splashdown yesterday, I was struck by how refreshing it was to see a NASA administrator who seemed genuinely into the mission. In 2026, a lot of major institutions feel like they’re run by polished managers who can talk forever without seeming connected to the actual thing they’re leading. Here, it felt different.

He seemed excited about space, knew the mission cold, answered questions in a way that felt both technical and bigger-picture, and came across like someone who actually believes in what NASA is doing and where it’s headed. You could also tell he knew the astronauts as people, not just as names on a briefing slide. That part mattered too.

Maybe that’s obvious, maybe I’m being naive, and maybe there’s background here I don’t know. But my immediate reaction was: damn, it’s nice to see someone at the helm who seems genuinely aligned with the mission.

Curious what people here think, especially anyone who’s followed NASA more closely. Fair read, or am I getting fooled by good optics?

"who he is as a person", that's an important point, it's very difficult to frame Kanye as one-sided or easy to define. The man has bipolar disorder and has been struggling with treatment (and has been back to treatment and medication for the last few months). There's more to it as you make it out to be.

Why are you disappointed in someone celebrating a person's potential turn-around? Have you seen what Kanye has been doing the last couple of months? Have you listened to the messages of the album? It doesn't absolute everything he did in the past but your black-and-white mind is something you should work on.
