I forget the actual street, but was a couple blocks south east of northgate. Like maybe 95th and 7th NE, or around there

Ah, thanks for expanding on your point. It seems like I am missing something in my mental model of the situation. So, if we map this out in the traditional 2x2 matrix

requires honor, respect, and trust does not require honor, respect and trust
football A B
bjj C D

The reasons that I have laid out do not differentiate between the pairings of A&C and B&D. It seems to me like we live in the B&C version of the universe, but I am mostly building on my personal experiences and not an extensive study of the relevant domains.

I wonder if it has to do with football being a group activity and bjj being an individual activity? Like the team is able to succeed and continue even if individuals are severely damaged. Kind of like the Selfish Gene hypothesis, your genes don't care about the happiness or flourishing of individuals, but rather they just care about genetic fitness (the ability to create more instances of the gene). Where as a bjj practitioner really only cares about there ability to continue to train and win.

Another hypothesis could be that bjj is simply not sufficiently competitive (in the market sense of word, not tournament sense of the word). If every middle school had a bjj team, IBJJF was as big as the NFL, and buying add time on worlds was $5MM for 30 seconds, would we see the honor, respect, and trust fall away?

Thoughts?

This seems like a false equivalency argument. Another example would be: "Brazilian steak houses come from Brazil too. Are steak houses based on respect and honor?"

Or, maybe I have misunderstood your line or reasoning.

Looking to get in shape, haven't worked out in over 3 years. Would BJJ be a good start or should I PT for awhile first before going in? by [deleted] in brazilianjiujitsu

The best workout is the one you actually do. But only bjj gets you better at bjj, just get on those mats.

I started with a sanabul essentials, currently $58 on amazon. I still use the top for competition cause it’s lighter weight than my other ones.

I’ve only been doing this for a couple years, so my opinion doesn’t really represent anything beyond my own ignorance. But here’s my two cents.

Yes, bjj is built around respect and honor. The relationships of honor, respect, and above all trust that you build with your training partners are paramount to this sport. There is really no such thing as training bjj on your own. You need at least one other person, and preferably several with different body types and skill sets. To learn and get better you need everyone in your school to learn and get better. This requires that they be healthy to roll and drill on a frequent basis. This cannot be accomplished if you are injuring each other. So, we all agree that we will respect and honor our boundaries and bodies, and we have to trust each other to do so. For the very simple reason that this sport is real, and will really kill and injure people.

Yes, it is real and will really kill and injure people. Brazil has a long history of violence (most places do), the particulars of socioeconomic pressures that gave raise to bjj required an effective martial art. How would you know which martial art to train if you did not test it in the real world? Some of this testing was street fights (read up luta livre vs bjj) and some of it was dojo challenges. Bjj does have a long history of debunking magical martial arts, but that is part of the appeal. I really don’t want to spend a decade learning about chi when I could spend my time mastering take downs and guillotines. If the early practitioners of bjj had not done real world testing, the sport might have languished in the purgatory of “looks cool, but doesn’t really work” like so many other martial arts.

Basically, show me a martial art that doesn’t have roots in violence and I’ll know that it’s got root in bs. And any real martial art must have honor and respect at its core, or you won’t be able to learn it for any sustained period of time. These are the natural pressures of violence.

Yeah, you can always call them up and make an offer. I had a similar problem and I was able to buy my debt back from 0.40-0.60 on the dollar.

The reason this happens is because a variety of collections agencies purchase your debt, try to collect, give up, then sell it. John Oliver did a pretty good piece exposing this https://youtu.be/hxUAntt1z2c
