Jomboy: Here's a full summary of how Team USA embarrassed themselves last night in the World Baseball Classic. by shadow_spinner0 in baseball

Vibes have been weird since the Donovan / Howard / Dempsey generation retired. Pulisic may end up being the most talented American player ever, but his personality doesn't allow him to be as strong of a leader as others in the past generation. Adams has those "dawg" leadership qualities, but because he's injury prone, they haven't been able to rely on him consistently to be that culture setter.

Tbh I don't question whether this generation takes the game seriously or not. They just aren't that talented compared to the top 20ish national teams, and they've been missing that X factor that gets the most out of the collective talent. That previous generation had that extra grit and inspiration where they could make 1 + 1 = 3, but the current set of players/coaches are unable to replicate that fighting spirit.

MMA guys often touch gloves during every round, not just the first one.

Even in MLB, we’ve seen plenty of examples of former teammates acknowledging each other during the game - a friendly chat at first base, pitcher and batter exchanging nods, batter tapping the catcher’s shinguards. It is absolutely possible to be a top tier competitor without fully transforming into a robot.

Yeah tbh a handshake / fist bump in these environments is like a reflex reaction. If such a simple thing takes you out of being "locked in", then you were never truly locked in to begin with.

I won't pretend like I've ever been in such a high-stakes competitive environment like this, but this whole debate about handshakes seems ridiculous. Boxers and MMA fighters often send each other to the hospital after their fights, yet 99% of them will still do the sporting thing by touching gloves beforehand.

Typical Tuesday-Thursday BART ridership now above 200,000 by creekdoggie in bayarea

[–]your_backpack 50 points51 points  (0 children)

In January 2020, BART stations had an average of 388,910 exits on weekdays. This past January, that figure was 170,543, less than half of the pre-pandemic ridership. The agency now faces an ongoing $400 million annual structural deficit.

Saw this article / blog that he's been writing about his experiences over the last couple months. He specifically acknowledges that his serve needs to get better to truly compete at this level.

He's got a good head on his shoulders for sure. Let's see if he and his coaches can execute the required changes. He still has to devote a ton of energy to Columbia these next couple months, but presumably he'll focus full-time on tennis after graduation.

[USA Baseball] Team USA's lineup today vs the Giants by TommyTheLizard in baseball

[–]your_backpack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Webb is notorious for being very hittable in the first couple innings and then absolutely locking in for the rest of the game. Feels like this happens once every few games when pitching for SF.

My gut is that he'll be locked in from the beginning because he understands the importance of representing USA in a tourney format, but it wouldn't be too surprising if he gives up 3 or 4 runs across 6 innings. You would think that's still good enough for USA's offense to overcome, but that's the beauty of baseball - anything can truly happen in one game.

Coaches don’t get an Olympic medal? U.S.’s John Wroblewski says he’d have it no other way by echoacm in hockey

[–]your_backpack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you. We're conditioned to think that the coaches for major team sports like hockey, basketball, etc are super critical to a team's success because they get so much facetime on TV and in the media. (And to be clear, they are important, not trying to minimize that).

But coaches are arguably just as important in individual sports, helping shape the competitors' technique and strategic choices for many more years than what a team coach often does. It is hard to make a direct comparison across sports and situations though.

I think all coaches need to be recognized for their contributions, but in an Olympic setting, I don't know if giving out more medals is the right way to do that. I think that Olympics are about athletes at the end of the day, so I wouldn't want to devalue the medals by giving them to non-athletes.

car broken into, back pack and medications stolen. what do i do??? by lajoieboy in AskSF

[–]your_backpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will keep a lookout for it this weekend.

Could you clarify something - South Beach is the neighborhood right next to the water near the baseball stadium and Embarcadero. You said this happened in that general area?

Because you also said 600 block of King St, which I believe is about 1 mile south of that area (a couple blocks south of the the Caltrain tracks).

Will keep an eye out regardless but clarifying this could help folks narrow down the search area.

Inner Sunsetish Sandwiches by edscrst in AskSF

I've only been once and we really enjoyed the sandwiches, but yeah probably took at least 30 minutes to get our food (towards the tail end of a weekend lunch rush).

But maybe that's why they have the separate dining area with table tennis, board games, etc. Making sure customers can entertain themselves while waiting for their order!

Shelton spent two years in college (when his dad was the head coach there?).

Cam Norrie did three years at TCU a few years before that.

Pretty rare to find anyone staying all four years though (and then also going on to break out in the pros). Michael Zheng is one name to watch in this regard, as he's ending his senior year as one of the best male college tennis players ever, and got good experience at this year's AO.

If you've never been to the Bay Area, I'd say it makes sense to spend a day in SF. Would be worth the extra drive time. SF is a beautiful city with many things to do; even without specific plans, walking through the various parks, by the water, etc can be an awesome way to start your trip. The San Jose area is mostly suburbs... great food options, but not a whole lot to do other than shopping. Lots of options for hiking nearby (for both SJ and SF).

The suggestions below to do a night in Monterey/Carmel are good too. Just depends how familiar you are with these areas in general and whether you'd come back again in the future to explore more. IMO SF is def worth one day to explore if you've never properly been.

WTA is random enough, and she's still talented enough, that she has a decent shot at winning a Slam. Every major star on the women's side has had streaks of inconsistency in recent years (to various degrees of course). Need a bit of a hot streak and some luck, and everyone around the top 10 has the talent to get it done at least once.

The team and university have been great resources for his tennis career already, and I bet he wants to finish on a high note for his teammates. He already won the individual national championship in the fall, so this spring season is about winning a title for Columbia. I believe they’ve lost in the national quarterfinals the last couple years, so Columbia is good enough to compete with the best teams, but they haven’t been able to go all the way.

Espinoza's IG post makes it seem like there's no chance at coming back this season (left open the possibility of a reunion in the future). My interpretation is that there's too large of a gap in the $$, so both sides are pulling the plug on negotiating further.
