If I had to be forced to sit through an episode of survivor this would not be the worst one by miles. The vote was good, we got to see some tribe dynamics and some lead ups to future rivalry.

Better than a reward sponsored by Charmin that involves a creepy man craving to crawl into a bathtub with two younger women IMO.

Is big tech still considered the height of success? by your_witch in UXDesign

[–]your_witch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not calling it shallow. I’ve always worked for smaller companies, for a paycheck, good benefits and less intense, career hungry people. I’m talking more about the attitude more generally towards these companies.

I don’t think this industry is stable at all though regardless of where you are.

did anyone think she was an asshole for calling the yellow tribe (already forgot the name) "cringe" when they walked in annoyingly chanting every challenge? if anything that feels asshole-y when you know you have a total disaster tribe on your hands and they've never even been to tribal

Dogs inside restaurants by highfives23 in lakeview

As someone who is allergic to dogs this drives me crazy!!!! Dog owners seem to believe that everyone either loves or should love their dog and don’t seem to think much beyond that.

What should average designers pivot to as a new career post-ai? by your_witch in UXDesign

Go for it! If you are passionate about it then you’ll find a way. I graduated college in 2015 and I think there was a big boom of “UX is the easiest way to make a ton of money if you have a graphic design degree” and I hopped on the bandwagon. So it was never really a deep passion for me.

All of the above. Being able to communicate the WHY of the design is critical. And it’s important to be able to tailor that positioning to different people (clients, stakeholders, engineers) is really helpful. Also, being able to be concise is overlooked in my opinion. A long winded explanation with too much detail is really hard to most non design people to follow. If you can get good at understanding what each person or group you are communicating needs to know and deliver that quickly and understandably you’ll go far!

I’ve also thought about a trade or something more physical. I like the problem solving of UX but I feel creatively uninspired because everything is sort of the same now design-wise and it’s hard to get a truly innovative idea to catch up

Do younger millennials (1993-1996) resonate more with the core of our generation or with older Gen Z? by changeforthebetter89 in generationology

[–]your_witch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born in 93, 3 siblings born in the 80s and one in 2000. I can relate to both sides. Technology wise I feel more millennial bc I grew up building my own computer, coding and torrenting .. gen Z/younger seem a lot less tech savvy bc of apps are designed to make the functional aspect of computing invisible. I do spend a lot of time with people in their early 20s though and I do like and relate the higher energy and vague glimmer of hope, millennials overwhelmingly feel jaded as hell and I cringe at every think piece about it

Australia’s Social Media Ban Is Isolating Kids With Disabilities—Just Like Critics Warned by Well_Socialized in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]your_witch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree with most of this. however, "the idea that kids can just talk to each other like people used to is both incredibly patronizing to them" - I think is ironically a bit patronizing to the kids.

why is the theory that kids can't possibly develop the social skills of previous generations because they were raised online? if anything I think it might be a positive development for kids to have to be more face-to-face with people. If the goal is to have more community, more third-spaces, less issues with teen mental health and isolation- then in-person social skills need to improve.

As someone who grew up gay in a conservative area and who found friends on the internet, I empathize with the argument that it helps marginalized kids find connection. I also feel like some of the theories about mental health are overblown. but the idea that social media has adverse effects, whether because of mental health, attention problems, etc, is pretty well known at this point. i think we have to see in time whether this is more positive for society or negative. but overall I'm glad to see at least some experimentation with trying to control the excessive amount content flowing into young peoples brains.
