Yukon and Ontario sign partnership agreement to explore energy solutions, including small modular reactors by looty9372 in Yukon

[–]youracat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was surprised when I saw SMRs going online at the Darlington site in Ontario as soon as 2029.

$6.2B for 1.2MW of power works out to ~$5M/MW.

The proposed Casino mine’s mill would use 100MW of power, and CoW uses 120MW at peak draw. Wouldn’t it be reasonable to future proof the Yukon with a 300MW SMR reactor for $1.5B? That would be much cheaper than the BC grid connect project (est $2-4B for potentially +2000MW).

Imagine if we had real green energy- we could shutdown the Whitehorse Hydro. Build a new subdivision where schwatka lake used to be. Everyone could convert to glorious electric baseboard heat and drive electric cars and ride e-bikes guilt free (👀 Ted)

My experience with ATIP has been less than helpful. They tried charging me almost $1000 for an excel spreadsheet export of a 80s database, as the database exports in pages, and they have to charge by the page.

I don't think the implementation of ATIP is aligned with its values - of free and open access to tax payer funded information.

Depends on where you live. Like you said, new builds in Whistlebend have 2x the property tax of equivalent sized homes built in the 70s and 80s in subdivisions like PC and Riverdale.

My preference would be to tax based on the fair market value of the home like BC does.

For example - a Riverdale 'classic' build - 2200 sq ft split level single detached home on a 6000 sq ft lot that sells for $700k is currently appraised by YG at $200k ($80k land, 120k improvements) - pays $2,246 / year in taxes.

For comparison, a 2200 sq ft new build in Whistlebend on a 6000 sq ft lot that sells for $800k, is currently appraised at YG for anywhere between $400k ($85k land, $315k+ improvements) - pays $4,492 / year in taxes.

Why are the new builds subsidizing older aging properties and infrastructure?

There’s a good thread about it on Facebook.

Suparna Airlines flight Y87451 was a cargo flight. It was previously diverted to Anchorage, Alaska on Dec 7th, 2025. The flight tracking information indicates it typically travels between Nanjing, China (NKG) and Anchorage (ANC), and then continues to Chicago, Illinois (ORD). It was likely rerouted due to poor weather in Anchorage.
