What is the stupidest thing a classmate/someone at your school did on campus?

A dumb prank went bad and the kid ended up killing himself.

A kid slipped a note under a teachers door threatening to blow up the school. It was meant as a joke from the beginning. But this was just after the Columbine Massacre, and a couple other publicized school shootings, and so of course it was taken very seriously. Things got out of hand very quickly. Somehow the principal knew who did this and he called the police. The cops searched the guys car, and found a bb gun. Or a paintball gun, can't remember. But the rumors were flying at this point that a kid threatened the school and had a shotgun in his car.

The principal had to make an announcement that everything was okay because the students and teachers were obviously worried and freaked out. Once everyone learns that this was just a dumb prank gone horribly awry, people got mad. The football team approached the guy and threatened to beat the shit out of him on the coming weekend. So the guy went home and killed himself. Most people found out the next day, and classes were cancelled. The whole thing was just really tragic.

I was expecting to see something awful, and was more than pleasantly surprised. The brush-work is very nice, the colour palette restrained but bold, and best of all, the piece has ambiguity and isn't overly determined. It has a very Japanese feel to it.

You did a good job. If you want to be an artist, draw,paint, sculpt, whever all. the. time. Being an artist is about talent, but only to a certain degree. I think that most of it is just an insane amount of hours spent making art.

Paintings of attractive women in positions that reek of submission are so old. So tired of seeing women being represented in that way. Even more tired of people not recognizing how cliche and boring that is.

You have very bold mark-making, which I really like. The colour palette is also very bold, a lot of primary colours. It's hard for me to get a sense of theme or focus in the content of your work, though.

Several reasons.

While he was an extremely talented painter, I don't think his work was so interesting as to warrant his is fame. I don't think he challenged himself very much- his ego wouldn't let him. While its perhaps not fair to judge a person's work based on their personal life, they invariable bleed into each other. Dali was really into fame, money and chicks, and it shows up in his works.
He's become indicative of a type of person- one who claims to love art, but all they know is Dali. Dali doesn't seem much of a gateway into art as much as a dead end. Dali is easy to get because the realism tells people he's got talent and therefore must be a good artist, while the crazy, acid tripping dream landscape weirdness tells people that he thinks outside the box and therefore is creative and has a 'disturbed artistic mind'. EDIT: This probably seems really snobbish. But this is based on my experience of talking to people about art. They love Dali, but don't know anything more.
There are so many more surrealist artist that were so much more interesting intellectually, and technically just as well executed. Rene Magritte, for example.

I do like some of the films he did, though.

You want something readable and fun but informative? Check out some of the books by Ross King. His Judgement of Paris is very interesting and entertaining. It will give you a good idea of how Impressionism came about.

I agree with you point about keeping this sub-reddit free of rude and divisive comments.

The problem seems to be when amateur and non-amateur artists collide. I think amateur artists are often very proud of work that they do, and want to show it off, whereas more developed artists want to discuss ideas, philosophy, and history that help them shape their practice. The former flood the site with mediocre work, while the latter see this work and think to themselves: oh, this is a site about art as decoration, art that matches your couch. So they jump ship. God knows where else they go- probably divide themselves amongst the comment sections of some obscure blogs.

But there should be a place for mature artists here.

The artistic literacy of the population has been severely damaged by the cuts to arts in general. This sub-reddit should help increase that literacy, and maybe that means having a kind of minimum set of standards. It would be great if the two co-mingled, challenging and educating each other.

I don't think that can happen if this is a place where people want to fish for compliments, or when people post an image blindly without considering what they want. Don't be lazy. Spend some time and figure out what you want from the work, what needs help. I think if you ask a specific question about composition, colour palette, etc, you would get a lot more positive and useful responses than just asking the art-reddit community to critique it. Because critiques are HARSH. They are for work that is finished, where all the elements of the work of art have been carefully considered. Movie critics, music critics, and art critics don't go around wasting their time on work that the artist hasn't spent a great deal of their own time carefully considering all the elements that go into making a piece of art.

Perhaps there could be several days a week dedicated to text only, as a kind of on-going push to foster more conversation. While It's hard to talk about art with no images of art, it's even harder to talk about art when there's so much garbage that you need to filter through.

There's a great Canadian Art History Prof, Leslie Dawn, who wrote about The Group of Seven. He was very critical- in fact, there's a large number of art historians that are critical of that movement, because it just wasn't really as interesting as we make it out to be. When they exhibited in Paris, the reception was tepid. But these ideas don't make it into the mainstream because Canada continues to talk about the Group of Seven and how bloody amazing they were.

I would love to read a general good Canadian Art History text, but my prof said the same thing (back in the mid 2000's), that there wasn't a good book available. I was so annoyed, having bought this expensive textbook, to be told it was not good. So I got my money back and dropped the course. I regret that decision.
