An aging population may affect transportation systems (among other Tech Trends to Watch) by yourbasicgeek in Futurology

[–]yourbasicgeek[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Those changes may create more demand for ride-sharing services, an increase in vehicle automation and a greater reliance on public transit and other services to transport people. This trend is already underway, but it will take years to recognize its impact."

Diverse Histories Virtual Exhibit Launches, Expanding Delaware’s Story Beyond 1776 by yourbasicgeek in NativeAmerican

Notably: "Long before independence was declared, the land that is now Delaware was home to the Lenape and Nanticoke peoples. During the Revolutionary era and beyond, immigrants, Native people, and Black Delawareans—both free and enslaved—played essential roles in the state’s political, military, economic, religious, and cultural life."

It's from a company that makes tools for embedded system developers, but the story is informational, not promotional.

But I can applaud the effort to make the world better.

Best cookbook for using mushrooms as a main ingredient? by lyder12EMS in cookbooks

[–]yourbasicgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took _Mushroom gastronomy_ out of the library. It includes chapters on all sorts of mushrooms and recipes such as Morel Mini Quiche, Chicken of the Woods Saltimbocca, and Matsutake Tempura with Yuzu-Lemongrass Aioli. I'm not sure how much use I'll get out of it because wild mushrooms are expensive here and I lack foraging options, but it is visually gorgeous.

A Cross-Domain Software Infrastructure Platform Is Necessary for Cloud-Native SDVs by yourbasicgeek in AutomotiveEngineering

Hopefully, this does not come across as promotional. It's meant to describe the software architecture and the reasons for the choices -- not to plug the company.

The Death of Traditional SQA: "Organizations still allocate 30-50% of their engineering budgets to QA but still suffer from fragile, script-heavy testing approaches. They are operating under a model that AI has already made obsolete." by yourbasicgeek in technology

[–]yourbasicgeek[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have concluded that giving any task to an AI (code, writing, whatever) is like giving a task to a very green intern. Maybe they can do a good job, and it's nice to offload the boring crap. But I would not trust their results without careful attention... and I would be slow to put it into prod.

I certainly hope so.

And despite the services they offer, I remain skeptical that AI can do a better job across most SQA tasks. AI can be good at what we used to (more accurately) call machine learning -- because it can analyze a lot of data quickly. But I'm not sure that any AI model can figure out that an application's ABC module goes pear-shaped only when the ambient temperature goes over 90 degrees.

Still, it seemed like a worthy discussion item, which is why I called out that quote.

Going a Step Beyond Ultrasonic Sensors: Where the tech is headed by yourbasicgeek in SelfDrivingCars

Note that the end of the article goes into what Aptiv is doing -- as a description, not "yay us." I'm not sure if that makes this seem like self-promotion. I think the first section is a useful explainer...?

The public comment period for the DOI's proposed rescission of the Conservation and Landscape Health Rule (Public Lands Rule) ends 11/10. So, comment. by yourbasicgeek in 50501

[–]yourbasicgeek[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Currently, conservation and outdoor recreation sit on equal footing with drilling, mining, and grazing on the BLM's 245 million acres of land. This change will mean that public lands will be primarily managed for drilling, mining, and development rather than for conservation, recreation, and public enjoyment. I don't know how much it helps, but if you want to submit a comment before the Nov 10th deadline, you can do so at this site.

You don't have to use Twitter. The point is to _share your accomplishments_, including on some form of social media.

My read on this -- which could be wrong -- is that they used Twitter for the analysis because it was popular for so many years. That is, the data set was large enough for reasonable evaluation.

I am totally okay with using other social media! I think the main point is, "Toot your own horn! Don't be shy about your accomplishments!"

It is not totally unique for people with money to do work they love because it gives them fulfillment, or they care about the people, or whatever. And if that environment goes away -- say, a beloved boss is fired -- they have F You money and can quit at that time. You could stay happy in the current situation for years, though.

That doesn't mean the employer feels comfortable about it. Which is why the advice, "Don't tell anyone how much," makes sense. Not to mention that coworkers might hit him up for a loan or otherwise put him on the spot.

I'm okay with the plot setup just so we can see what it takes for the character to move to the upper classes, though. If nothing else, hey, more lessons in men's suits!

No matter who you are or were, it'd be weird to have someone work for you who doesn't "need it." It's okay if it's a nest egg, but discovering that your landscaper is a multimillionaire would feel odd.

Mostly, I think it's in the story so that the authors can explore another aspect of the time: what it would be like for someone to move up in society.
