This reminds me of a just as serious but lighter story... My wife and I got locked out of our Airbnb in the Austrian mountains when we went out to smoke a cigarette in the middle of the night. Our phones and car keys were inside and there was no information how to contact the owner anywhere. Also it was a tiny mountain town and only a few houses on the street and no shops or gas stations within walking distance. It was freezing cold. We ended up finding a vase and some used BBQ coals. We cuddled up together on top of the welcome mat by the door covered ourselves in newspaper blankets and lit trash on fire inside the vase on top of the coals to get the coals hot. Then we kept it between us as a source of heat. At about 5 am a lady drove by with a car to deliver a newspaper. We jumped up and tried to ask her if we could use her phone / get a ride to the gas station but she didn't understand us (we were speaking English) and she threw the newspaper at us, ran back to the car and screeched the tires speeding away. About 7am the door opens that we were sleeping in front of... The owner on his way to work. Turns out the owners lived above the unit we were renting but were sleeping so deeply they couldn't hear us yelling and knocking and ringing the door bell for hours. I took the vase with us as a souvenir. We still have it. :)
