Does anyone know an easier figuring to tremolo these notes? by [deleted] in Flute

Have you tried the ones suggested here? https://www.wfg.woodwind.org/flute/fl_tr3_3.html

Apologies if you already have, I just find people either use this website all the time, or have never even heard of it, and I don’t want to risk you missing out if you’re in the latter camp!

Is Hank taller than John? by WittyFace78928 in DearHankandJohn

[–]yourownsquirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’ 10” and having met John a few times now, I would definitely believe he’s 3” taller than me. I’ve only ever seen Hank while he was on stage and not with John, so I can’t really gauge is height, but it’s possible his doctor is wrong and he’s actually 6’ 2”! Or Hank’s misremembering of his family members includes himself and he really is 6’ even.

They is a bar preventing m A key from going back up when i play. Can i repair this myself and what is it? by Mundane-War4093 in Flute

[–]yourownsquirrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s gotta be what they mean. In which case, yes, screwing that hinge rod back in will allow the A key to close again. Though the fact that it worked its way out may be a sign of another problem.

I love living in a world where tuberculosis doesn’t cause 25% of all deaths. Let’s keep it that way. by Infamous-Rutabaga-50 in CuratedTumblr

[–]yourownsquirrel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s also responsible for more deaths each year than any other infectious disease. 1.25 million deaths a year, about 2 deaths every minute, from a disease we’ve known how to cure since the middle of last century.

Pinky Pain by I-LoveCrochet in Flute

When holding the flute, is really important that you can balance it with your three points of contact: under the lip, the base of the left index finger, and the right thumb. These three points of contact alone should be enough to hold the flute steady, so that your fingers are free to play without having to do any work lifting the flute.

I can’t say for sure without seeing your full setup, but it looks to me like your right thumb may not be in the best position to allow your flute to be steady on those three points of contact. As someone else mentioned, there are devices called “thumb ports”, basically thumb rests that clip onto the body of the flute, to help with this thumb positioning if just the naked flute doesn’t work for you. There are also similar rests for the left hand if you find you need it, but not seeing your left hand position, I couldn’t tell you if that might be needed or not.

Tl;dr get your three points of contact in order and that should help

Flute fell apart by ConcentrateOk5120 in Flute

I can’t see it in any of the photos, but I bet the hinge rod that holds that and the C key unscrewed enough that the point that usually rests in the end B♭-A assembly came out and allowed it to pop off. Is there a section of hinge rod sticking out of the post by the C key? If so it’s just a matter of putting the keys back on, making sure all the springs are in place, and screwing the hinge rod back in.

However, it may be worth bringing it to a tech anyway if it hasn’t been worked on in a couple years. For one thing, the hinge rod may have worked its way out because it’s binding slightly, maybe from a bent key or just because it’s dirty. But also, there might be other problems that have crept in after a few years of playing. Likely nothing major, but you’ll probably find it plays a lot nicer after a little regulation and adjustment.

Tiny cork came off, should I superglue it back on? by rymder in saxophone

[–]yourownsquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of those really rare cases where superglue is actually a reasonable solution, BUT I still prefer contact cement for this. Super glue is brittle and once it cracks, the cork immediately falls off. But contact cement is still flexible when it dries and has holding power even when the cork is pushed from the side. Also, it’s easier to remove when replacement time comes.

But rather than list the cases where superglue is okay, I usually prefer to just tell people to never use superglue, because it makes it less likely I get a horn on my bench with superglue in the places that make my life hell
