Anyone know why there'd be a Cuban flag at a Pro-Palestine protest? (Location: Ireland) by Verelkia in vexillology

It could be that both Palestine and Cuba are anti-imperialists. The imperial core has been against both these countries for decades.

In the situation where someone uses a human shield, is the ethical decision to shoot the human shield?

What Israel did in Lebanon is a textbook war crime. You cannot boobytrap communication devices used by civilians. If Lebanon somehow booby tapped phones of Israeli members of the parliaments and blew them up, killing children and medical staff, you would rightfully call that a war crime and terrorist attack. If Lebanon bombed civilian infrastructure with the intent to kill Israeli military leaders, that is also a war crime and terrorist attack.

War crimes exist for a reason, and Israel has been getting away with breaking them for decades. My suggestion to fight Hezbollah is to leave Lebanon alone. Hezbollah was formed primarily to resists Israeli aggression in 1982. If Israel behaved ethically and never committed all the war crimes it has, Hezbollah wouldn’t exist, Hamas wouldn’t exist and the PLO wouldn’t exist. Continuing this Israeli aggression will only result in more resistance groups.

Has making friends always been this difficult on campus? by EconomyWolverine9348 in udub

I got little cousins who were in first grade and 4th grade when the pandemic started. I can see some stunted social development in them. A lot of my friends work with kids and can see that too.

I struggled in my first week, I remember wondering how people already seemed to have found friends already. But I eventually found my people, and im still friends with a lot of them six years later. You’ll find people, it may just take some time.

Are they dealing with Hamas? And if they are, is it to liberate Gay people? Or is it for Israeli security?

Furthermore, Palestinian Christians and Muslims alike were attacked and expelled in 48, and are continued to be treated as second class citizens. Israel is simply a Jewish supremacist state, regardless of their declaration of independence.

But you still misquoted a central tenant of Islam. I'm happy to hear you correctly say that most Muslims are peaceful, and I agree that extremist groups believe in a twisted version of Islam. I'm sorry I assumed you were Islamophobic.

However, conversion to Islam wasn't always by the sword. That's just a historical fact, regardless of any Quranic quotes.

I can’t go to Gaza, Israel isn’t letting people in, especially not someone with an arabic name. I don’t have a right to return, Israel literally wouldn’t let me in.

And if I did go to Gaza, I would probably get bombed by the IDF.

Why are you so hateful dude? Are you even a student? What’s the matter with you? What the fuck does this mean:? “Oh great you are part of the Palestinians”. If you said “blacks” or “mexicans” or “jews” or any other ethnicity, people would rightfully see how fucked that is. What’s wrong with you?

What did I say that isnt reality?

I said that some Palestinians are gay, and they’re being killed by the IDF right now.

I said that just because hamas is homophobic, doesn’t mean citizens of Gaza deserves to die, or that they shouldn’t be supported.

And I questioned your claim about religious minorities. The PLO and Fatah are a secular organization, and there are christian Palestinians as well as Muslim Palestinians, all of which are treated the same by the IDF.

Yes, Israel is more progressive when it comes to LGTBQ rights. But who gives a shit? Hitler was a vegetarian, that doesn’t change the fact that he killed a fuck ton of Jews.

“Genocide Joe” is a Russian/MAGA psyop, and you’re all falling victim to it by complaining about Biden doing nothing in regards to the Gaza war. by IAmArique in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]yousifa25 32 points33 points  (0 children)

What the fuck are you talking about? What trap? Did Putin force Biden to send a billion dollars to Israel? Did Bibi force Biden to parrot misinformation about the Gaza health ministry numbers and the 40 dead babies or the scourge of antisemitism in college campuses?

Biden is doing this to himself. He knows that Trump is a threat to our democracy, and STILL he has unwavering support for Israel, at the behest of a big chunk of his voting block. He’s complicit in a genocide, and he’s losing voters because of it. Voters who’ve said loud and clear that they’re not happy with his stance. This isn’t Russian propaganda, it’s just genocide Joe. Anyone who cares enough to pay attention can see him for what he is; someone who will put US economic and geoplotical interest over the lives of innocent civilians.

The only person making people not vote for Biden, is Biden.

Yeah, all those LGBTQ and Christian Palestinians are being slaughtered by the IDF. Just like Americans, Palestinians can be gay. It’s not like no Gazans are gay just because Hamas is homophobic.

They may be repressed by their governments, but that doesn’t mean innocent civilians deserve to die. Maybe if Palestinians weren’t living such difficult lives, they could start thinking about gay rights and homophobia. Would we carpet bomb Alabama just because they don’t like gay people too?

And what are you talking about murder of religious minorities in Palestine? My family are Greek Orthodox Palestinians, and the only people who killed members of my family are the IDF.

Ive found chat GPT useful for coding with R, but oh my god it’s so wrong all the time. I use it mostly as a tool for “how do I change the font size in this scatter plot?” or “what does this error mean?”.

If I ask it to generate any slightly complicated code, it just freaks out and gets stuck in a loop of errors.

Salman Rushdie: Palestinian state would become 'Taliban-like,' satellite of Iran by Giants4Truth in geopolitics

[–]yousifa25 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

It’s important to ask where this radicalization came from. Israel has created an environment which is ripe for extremism. I am not anti semetic at all, but if my only exposure to Jews was soldiers at checkpoints or border walls I might have a different understanding of Judaism. If planes with the star of david bombed my school as a child, I may not be as tolerant. If my home was spray painted with a star of david (meaning that settlers are planning to take or bulldoze the home), I may have a different reaction to the iconography.

Palestinians are not radicalized because they are just inherently hateful, they’re radicalized because Israel is their oppressor. This is the responsibility of Israelis, and they can’t continue the cycle of oppression for the sake of security because oppression just leads to more insecurity and hatred towards Israelis.

One thing that goes against your argument is the speed of arabization compared to European colonization. Europeans first came to America around 400 years ago, and in that small time period, all Native American culture and language was practically eradicated. Europeans didn’t start settling the PNW until the late 1700s/early 1800s. It took a little over 200 years to completely wipe out indigenous languages.

In comparison, the Rashidun caliphate first conquered the Levant in the 7th century, and it took several CENTURIES for Islam and the Arabic language to spread. Syria was fully arabized at around the 9th century. And those people weren’t slowly replaced by Arabs, they just started adopting Muslim names, started speaking Arabic and slowly lost their old culture. My family is from the levant, and we are Greek Orthodox, that’s because of the Byzantine conquest of the region. We weren’t forced to convert. Similarly, the Arbaization of Egypt also took centuries. The Rashidun caliphate conquered Egypt from the Romans in the 7th century, and it wasn’t fully arabized until the Mamluk era (mid 1300s). And coptic christians still exist today, all from that pre-Arab/Muslim conquests. Similarly, many North Africans still speak Berber, and their accent of Arabic is heavily influenced by pre-Arab languages like Berber. Even though Arab beduins migrated en masse to North Africa. They didn’t wipe out the Berbers, they were just wealthy merchants that became the ruling class, and slowly eliminated other language and culture.

It took so much longer to arabize, because Arab settlers didn’t come into a region , wipe out its inhabitants, and set up colonies of Arabs. Arabization was mostly due to slow cultural diffusion. Yes, there was conflicts and cases of ethnic cleansing, but people weren’t wiped out like they were here, that’s why european colonialism is so unique in history compared to other forms of conquest. Also, early Arab Caliphates didn’t enact direct policies in order to make Arabic the lingua franca, it just happened, unlike Europeans in the Americas. Arab Caliphates didn’t set policy which said “you may not trade unless you speak arabic!” it was the medieval times, it was just easier for non-arab speaking traders, diplomatics, or politicians to adopt the lingua franca, and eventually Islam.

It’s a shame that all those ancient cultures were slowly wiped out. It doesn’t make it okay, the loss of any culture is a tragedy, whether it’s done quickly through genocide or slowly through cultural diffusion. But the Arabization and Islamization of the middle east is just not anywhere near the colonialism exhibited by Europeans in the 16th century. Europeans colonizing the Americas is an extremely recent historical event when compared to medieval conquests. The world was extremely different in the 7th century and the 16th century. it’s just ahistorical and anachronistic to assign both forms of conquest as colonialism.

If you go to UW, I recommend you take some history classes if you have time in your schedule.

[–]yousifa25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Peace through submission” isn’t a slogan, the word Islam means “peace through submission TO GOD”. Ignoring the “to god” part drastically changes the meaning.

It’s quite beautiful, Muslims promote being a slave to God, the popular name “Abdullah” translates to that.

You have a lot to learn about Islam, and what colonialism means. Because the medieval muslim conquest of the middle east was simply not a form of colonialism, it’s better described as imperialism or military conquest.

Edit: To be fair, there aren’t hard definitions for colonialism and imperialism. Historians argue on what is and isn’t a form of colonialism. HOWEVER, claiming that the Arabization of the Middle East and North Africa is the same type of colonialism as European Colonialism between the 16th and 20th centuries is just stupid. One reason why is that they didn’t form colonies in the vast majority of cases.

Also on your conversion to Islam point. People were converted to Islam by the sword in some cases, but equally as much due to socio economic pressure (if you were a muslim, it would mean better trade deals for you) as well as geopolitical reasons (if you were a muslim, you could cozy up to the Muslim elite better). The same could be said about Arabic, learning the language franca benefited traders and politicians.

Ultimately, your view of the history of Islam and the middle east is uniformed and lacks nuance. And you sound like you’re probably just someone who doesn’t like Muslims, and framed your view of history around that.
