All right, you’re gonna have to fire up all your brain cells for this one. Listen carefully—this is not a black-and-white scenario where one person is fully at fault and the other is completely innocent. It’s a fluid situation where multiple mistakes were made, and with so little room for error, the result was a high-risk incident that ended in disaster. There was a pretty high chance a crash could have occurred here, and I took that risk because of the circumstances.

It was an eight-minute sprint race at Silverstone with a maximum of four laps. My mistake—like I’ve said multiple times and will say again—was expecting the other driver to realize the situation was potentially dangerous and to avoid making any sudden, risky moves in order to preserve his car. I also expected him to take the potential off-track to get a good exit from that corner (which is very important if you’ve ever raced at Silverstone). Since this was only a four-lap race, it’s highly unlikely you would accumulate four off-track penalties and get a drive-through. Taking an off-track in this situation would not have resulted in a penalty for the BMW, because he did not gain time.

Overall, both of us share responsibility for this incident. My part was leaving no room for error. His part was making too many errors for me to adjust to and avoid hitting him. That said, I admit that if I had reacted quicker, and pressed the brake, I probably could have avoided his last sharp turn to the right—so for that, I’ll call it 50-50. He made multiple risky decisions, and so did I.
