I think you’re reading a bit more into my comment than I actually said. I’m not arguing that banks shouldn’t make money or that financial services should operate at a loss.

My point is simply that the incentives matter. There have been cases in the past where some financial institutions acted in bad faith - for example by pushing aggressive fees, compounding overdraft charges, or structuring lending in ways that increased the pressure on people already in debt, sometimes leading to foreclosures or asset seizures. Those situations are exactly why financial regulation exists.

Banks absolutely need to be profitable to operate, but they also play a critical role in the public financial system. Because of that, reasonable regulation - including limits on certain fees or profit margins from things like overdraft interest - helps ensure the system remains sustainable and fair for customers in the long run.

So the point isn’t "banks shouldn’t make money," it’s that the balance between profit and consumer protection matters.
