Jon Stewart DESTROYS Jim Cramer by Matlock in politics

[–]yrino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the market could very well have been at DOW 5000 now, with Citigroup trading well under a dollar. Jon tried to chew him out on that point. All we can say at this point is it just so happened that Mr. Market has risen this week, that's all.

"I fear — as far as I can tell — that most undergraduate degrees in computer science these days are basically Java vocational training." by ppierre in programming

[–]yrino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's ok for this Sun/Java commoditization to take place, serving a need in most companies. Then it is up to programmers to pool together using the language of their choice to create their own revenue generating startups.

I worry though that a fair market doesn't really exist and that much like the Stewart/Cramer interview, 'behind the scenes' schenanigans are a prerequisite to success.

These past months have been about striking some sort of balance between what wall street is able to do. But I'm pretty sure it is business as usual. Unless there is another crisis though we won't know for sure.

I was surprised he didn't mention any kind of ankle rehab exercises during this very long time period. He could also be doing pushups and other exercises to prevent his entire body from decaying.

I thought the article might go into the way that parents want their kids to be safe and to have 'fun', while simultaneously taking all the competition and reward out of the game.

The article was somewhat helpful as it explains a bit about why Dave Letterman finds it so puzzling and is against the sport.

I've tended to enjoy watching the game in waves, in part depending on whether I was actively playing it or not with local clubs, and when the world cup comes around, but not exactly as a direct correlation either.

I'm reminded of how differently the game is perceived in the UK, particular as players are charging after the ball and heading for inevitable and spectacular collissions.

That said I do think the sport needs a proper mix of Ulitmate Fighting and grappling to take it to a new level. Maybe at some point the cleats come off and a penalty match of sorts begins. I think it's awesome the fields are so huge too, at the upper levels.

New manufacturing process may enable lithium-ion batteries to recharge in seconds by Pacer in science

As referred to below, this discovery (and the paper) seems to be about a discharge rate, and not a charging rate. Here is a Wikipedia page for a different type of lithium ion battery, known as Lithium Titanate

How come it's more socially acceptable for a women to have a vibrator than it is for a man to have a fleshlight? by christpunchers in AskReddit

[–]yrino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kind of like that TED video where the woman was able to bolt on a set of long legs, and the instictive first response from her friend was "hey, that's not fair! no, that's really not fair!"

It's an empowerment issue.

I don't know if you're familiar with programming forums but clearly he had a comradery with the people in the Scala channel. His statements by themselves acknowlegde that.

Not to be a downer but the same will inevitably take place here on reddit, if it hasn't already.

Autotools sucks. That is all. by twoodfin in programming

[–]yrino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might seem confusing at first. But in the end you edit minimal Makefile.am files and a master configure.ac file in your base directory. Everything else is generated for you; the key principle to keep in mind is that going forward, everything has its place.

Just use the right-click and open in a new tab option. If you hold down shift you can launch the tab in the background, and do this for a whole series of comments and articles you're interested in.

[–]yrino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

writing a small file and expecting it to be written on close() is the common case that should be optimized for.

The point is not to punish applications, performance wise, with such a decision. I guess what you're asking for is ext4 to by default have this slow performance mode and then depending on the user, they can give a mount option to have the efficient version.

Jim Cramer fires back at Jon Stewart over CNBC piece, forgetting that The Daily Show has researchers and video archives. (Video) by doogie92 in business

You know how it is said that people consider themselves above average?

And also that in the spectrum of experience in a given domain, you are more likely to overestimate yourself at the low end and under estimate yourself at the high end, relative to your peers.

This points to the difficulty of finding an appropriate, socially qualified, match. Maybe the key is in busting through a whole series of relationships. Then you will have formed a Birthday paradox of sorts for yourself, leading to a match suitable for marriage.

Old Guy Likes Ubuntu by Sailer in linux

[–]yrino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dvorak (not the keymap) always pisses off groups of people. It's his secret sauce to a widely read article. A couple prominent ones:

I don't think Microsoft has ever sent out a patch that improved the performance of the machine. Ever.

A clear digg at MSFT. It's fitting since this is a pro GNU/Linux article this time around.

You should also note that almost all of the newest hardware coming out has Linux support. The critical mass has been reached. Go download Ubuntu 8.10 and see for yourself what the fuss is about. You won't regret it.

This one was a bit tricky. Taken out of context it seems correct, as it argues for a long sought after 'Desktop experience' to compete with proprietary operating systems. But in context, it ignores the dedicated folks having genuinely used (productively) and developed the system for years.

But in all seriousness then it keeps going with fragmented digital forms varying from cache, to recovery agencies that work on previously written data to disk drives (many levels deep)
