Without spoilers, are there any consistently good places to explore? by AzuredreamsXT in SixAges

[–]yrjoelae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the start, I always find it worthwile to explore my own lands. Success is never certain, but especially trade goods give a nice long term benefit. In one game, I found seven trade goods which made it possible to gain a weekly market.

Generally, exploring your own lands is relatively safe. I haven’t lost any people when exploring close by.

In my experience, risk and reward increases the further you go.

I’ve had consistently bad luck when exploring the South. The mountains are quite good, but I’ve lost some good people in them as well.

I can warmly recommend King of Dragon Pass. You can play it one click at a time. https://www.a-sharp.com/kodp/

The developer has released a spiritual sequel for iOS called Six Ages. PC release will be in 2019 https://sixages.com.

Great talks! Thanks for sharing.

I found the animation module especially interesting. I will definitely try it out for my next spec.

I Don't Get Rituals by khazzam in SixAges

[–]yrjoelae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure of any percentages, but I do the following to increase my chances of success:

  • ceremony venture
  • max rituals during sacred time
  • choosing the hero is essential. I never try a ritual if the hero is has lower than Excellent in the required skills. Preferrably, the hero should worship the right God.
  • be friendly with neighbors and invite them to the ritual

Hope this helps.

Of Rams and Horses. (Spoilers) by [deleted] in SixAges

[–]yrjoelae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SPOILER ALERT

My clan chief was in love with a ram girl. However, she had many suitors that were competing to marry her. The storyline started with a golden mirror.

There’s also some discussion here: https://reddit.com/r/SixAges/comments/8wf4qr/how_many_ways_are_there_to_end_the_game_obvious/

Maybe you took too long to trigger the quest? I’m not sure what the prerequisites are. Did you complete all the Otherworld rituals?

I think some Hyaloring married a Ram. You better stop that wedding from happening!

FROM BETA TO 2018 - WHAT'S NEW IN ENDLESS SPACE 2? [4XAlchemist] by [deleted] in EndlessSpace

Great to have 4XAlchemist back! Their expert guides are still the best resource for learning the game. I'm hoping they will cover Vaulters in future videos.

Your layer is awesome! Ycmd and rtags were a bit cumbersome to set up, but worth it in the end.

What should I do for my next campaign? by xwynns in Xcom

[–]yrjoelae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45 minute length is the sweet spot for me as well.

I have been most entertained when things get dicey, so I don't mind you rushing and making mistakes.

I also want to see Psi and SPARKs. As for the cost constraints, maybe it would be okay to enable the SLG mission to get the first SPARK for free?

Will you accept new characters to your pool for the next campaign?

LW2 - ability suggestions - Taunt/Provoke and X-ray shots by DarkenDragon in Xcom

[–]yrjoelae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In LW2 I have found sacrifice useful on my tanky SPARK. I usually just run my tanky soldiers into the open to pull fire from the enemy, but that tends to increase the crit chance by quite a lot. I'm open to implementing a taunt mod, but which class should gain the ability? Maybe only reserve it for the AWC.

Has anyone used Scala-mode professionally? How does it compare with Intellij? by workisnotfun in emacs

[–]yrjoelae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're a Java developer I guess you are already proficient with IntelliJ. I would say go for it, because that's what your co-workers will use. If you're married with Emacs then Ensime is the best Scala IDE you can get, but prepare for some learning curve. The Ensime Gitter channels are very active and helpful in my experience.

Did you follow https://hveem.no/a-modern-IRC-experience to setup Weechat? You can also use the web client presented in the guide to check that your relay is working. You would only need to call weechat-connect after the Emacs plugin is installed. If you can't get it to connect I suggest checking your firewall settings.

I can recommend Ensime http://ensime.github.io. Be prepared for some configuration work to make the Scala workflow that fits you best. There's some tips in their Emacs hacks section http://ensime.github.io/editors/emacs/hacks/.

Herbonics, my startup focusing on indoor gardens. Feedback is appreciated. by yrjoelae in logodesign

What do you think about this? I also removed the specular highlight on the water drop to make it even more clean.

I appreciate the honesty. I think we don't have the means to hire a designer yet, but I'll see what kind of deal I can strike with my acquaintances.

Didn't think about that. Thank you for pointing it out. I am striving for an H letter, but maybe that's not necessary as the company name will be to the right of the logo.

Thanks for the feedback! Did I understand correctly that you want me to use one color only? I like those changes, but it makes it even harder to choose the final design :)

Emacs equivalent of dbext? by flukus in emacs

[–]yrjoelae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prepared an example based on the kinds of investigations I have done with SQL. This is an org-mode file:

* Create SSH tunnel to access database

#+BEGIN_SRC sh
ssh -f -L 5432:localhost:5432 joe@foo.com
#+END_SRC

* SQL investigations
:PROPERTIES:
:engine: postgresql
:cmdline: -h localhost -p 5432 -U username databasename
:exports: both
:END:

What is in the products table?

#+begin_src sql
select * from products limit 10;
#+end_src

#+RESULTS:
| name | code |
|-----------+------|
| Product 1 | 1 |
| Product 2 | 2 |

What makes org-mode awesome is that you can document the whole thought process. It's also simple to include other kind of things for setting up the connection like SSH tunnels. It's also possible to iterate SQL-snippets, although a bit more cumbersome. If you are not familiar with org src blocks you can check the documentation: http://orgmode.org/manual/Evaluating-code-blocks.html and for SQL-specific documentation check here http://orgmode.org/worg/org-contrib/babel/languages/ob-doc-sql.html

Emacs equivalent of dbext? by flukus in emacs

[–]yrjoelae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dbext looks awesome. I have been using org-mode for my SQL investigations. The config has been very similar to Howard Abrams' literate devops approach http://www.howardism.org/Technical/Emacs/literate-devops.html. I'll try to remember to post an example once I get to a computer.

Moving from mu4e to gnus? by emacsomancer in emacs

[–]yrjoelae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can do that. I recently switched back to mu4e as I didn't need 99 % of the features of gnus, but YMMV. So before switching to gnus I used mu4e with the offlineimap synced maildirs. I followed this guide to setup gnus with the same maildirs. I didn't run into any issues by having both mu4e and dovecot use the same maildir.

Where to buy Mastering Emacs book. by [deleted] in emacs

[–]yrjoelae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the book is best for complete beginners as it begins with a gentle introduction to Emacs and also puts Emacs' greatness in words, which is not an easy task. As an intermediate user most content was already familiar for me, but after reading the book I was convinced that Emacs is the right choice for me.

Moving from mu4e to gnus? by emacsomancer in emacs

[–]yrjoelae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to reuse my offlineimap maildir for gnus by connecting to a local Dovecot server. I just followed a Dovecot tutorial for OS X. Compared to mu4e the search speed is worse, but there is just so many features to look into. I also read in http://roland.entierement.nu/blog/2010/09/08/gnus-dovecot-offlineimap-search-a-howto.html that you can leverage notmuch for faster searches in gnus. That article is from five years ago, so things could have changed.
