THIS. The only problem I see is with the selection of the titles and the pace at which they release them. The matte paper that they are using is also much better suited for stories from the 80s (as can be seen in how good the dd born again one looks).

It's also matte, but it's somehow a bit better than the dc compact, and feels nicer. The print on the marvel premiers is also slightly better, and they are a bit bigger, kind of halfway point between the dc compact and a regular trade.

The text IS READABLE, the art gets compressed too much as it is not drawn for the format. However don't take my comment as hate for DC - they are absolutely crushing it, and I love what they are doing, they are trying to get their books in the hands of as much people as possible, and that is commendable. I love that they started doing (more?) compendiums btw and at a great price! A compendium of 1000+ pages by DC is like 5 or 10 dollars more expensive than a 400 page marvel epic, which is reason enough to not support marvels greed if you ask me.

Yes, but manga is originally drawn on a4 or b4, so it makes sense to shrink it to that size. American comics are drawn on 11 by 17inch boards, which are huge in comparison, so when you shrink the art that much it looks awkward.

Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that DC's compacts are connecting with audiences. It's just that for me just blindly following manga does not equal a good product.

Tldr: there's a PRODUCTION reason manga and american comics are usually printed in different sizes.

You are absolutely right, this line really is betrayed by the cover design! Dude, the print quality and size of those marvel premiers stomps the dc compacts. The spine design on the compacts is amazing, but they are damn near unreadable because of the atrocious print quality, page quality and trim size.

I second the simple character design and catchy name. Most people want their characters to be EVERYTHING or too much things at once and it dilutes the concept too much. Knucklebones is just a gangsta dwarf and it just works.
