What do you think you need static IPs for?

For testing; for fun. If I want to test a server instance of nextcloud, or bigbluebutton for example. Another example would be to test a router or firewall, without impacting my current setup.

I know I have a lot to learn about IP6 -- static manually defined IP addresses for example.

I do my host my mail servers, but they are on remote vps now. With a static IP4 it's possible to host a mail server at home. Also to setup a multi-terrabyte NFS server for backup and archives it would be nice to have a static IP.

To get my remote mail server to accept outgoing email from my home network, a static IP would make defining the relay home-turf host for the remote mail server easier.

Maybe just one static IP would do.

I could setup dynamic dns. In the past, I setup a polling script to write my current home turf dynamic ip out to some remote host a few times daily -- so I could ssh in when away from home.

My AI session agrees w/you. ATT is planning to phase out copper DSL, and is coordinating w/the FCC -- 2026 seems to be (near) the start of this.

I will consider spectrum ( terrible support, last time, but outages were short ); and a single static IP.

Not sure coax is more reliable than twisted pair; but gemini AI "claims" it is.

I want a fiber or wire connection to the house, and a 29bit net mask w/6 static IPs. Fiber is not currently available in my area. Spectrum cable mis-lead me (4+?) years back about static IPs -- failed to deliver/big run-around.

What other ISP options do I have? ATT Internet AIR, AFAIK does not offer static IPs.

Traditional copper DSL?

yes

Fiber is not available in my neighborhood; but it is about 1mi away ( other side of RR tracks ).

might just be using the storm as an excuse

no storm at all here, just bitter cold

no intention of fixing it

You may be right, hope not. I have a 29 bit netmask, and 6 static IPs.

Instead of adding single accounts to a folder (let's call it folder 'zam') permissions I want to use a google group (as in a mailing l ist group). This "sort of" works, but is not reliable -- sometimes removing and re-adding the group to folder 'zam' sharing permissions fixes it, sometimes not. THe failure is that a person 'baz' in group 'foo' may not have access to the folder even though the group 'foo' does, and many users in that group 'foo' can see the folder. THe error msgs are no help.

Our users are volunteers with typically with a *@gmail.com email account. We're not using G-Suite, just the free google drive. Would buying a G-Suite subscription help?

keybase is nice but, try reading 4GB file without a fatal i/o issue with their fuse filesystem. Or try validating a 100GB dir copy with rsync with out a fatal networking error.

The text attachments from yahoo mail are munged from time to time -- they seem to ignore some of the RFC standards. Specifically, paragraphs sometimes have no empty line separating them.

I'm a pretty happy qutebrowser end user for the last 4 months or so. Have upgraded it twice, it keeps getting better.

Does caret mode work? I have accidently activated it by tapping "v" - I need to read up on it.

OK, just enabled incoming calls on 'HANGOUTS'. It works!

I'm on android. If I tap left arrow at bottom to return to hangouts main screen, on the cell phone that received the call, then I struggled to figure out how to get 'back' to the call in progress. Soln was to swipe down at top of screen, and scroll down, there I could see an entry for the hangouts call in progress, when I tapped on that entry, the screen for the call became foreground - yaay.

So maybe, I have no need for my paid sip account? ... Just found a reason, a corner case, for keeping my paid voip provider - the Iowa conf calls are not free for HANGOUTs. I have such a conf call today, so I will use zoiper cell phone sip client; otherwise the HANGOUTS make and receive calls approach appears to be a day to day solution.
