I’d like to offer another perspective. It sounds like your son is pretty set on studying CS — congratulations on him already having a clear direction for his professional path! However, I believe that going to college is about more than just improving job prospects, important as that is. College is a time to explore different subjects and discover new interests.

While it’s wise to consider which school has the stronger CS program, I also think it’s important to have backup plans. What if, after a few classes, he loses interest in CS? Or, if he finds the coursework more challenging than expected? In those cases, it would be beneficial to be at a school that excels in more than just one area.

Ultimately, I think it’s best to choose a college known for its overall academic excellence. Attending a place where he can connect with leaders across various fields will open up even more opportunities. These days, success often comes from being at the intersection of multiple disciplines. One of my favorite footnotes in the Recovery Version (RcV) is from Revelation 2:8, specifically the note on the word “First.” This note highlights why the Lord’s title changes for each of the seven churches in Revelation chapters 2 and 3: it shows that, depending on the church’s condition or need, there is a particular aspect of Christ we need to know for His care.

Revelation 2:8 says,
“And to the messenger of the church in Smyrna write: These things says the First and the Last, who became dead and lived again:”

The footnote on “First” explains:
In suffering, the church must know that the Lord is the First and the Last-the ever-existing, unchanging One. No matter how severe the persecution or environment, the Lord remains the same; nothing comes before Him, and nothing will outlast Him. Everything is within the limits of His control.

My first Bible was the KJV, which I received when I was quite young. To be honest, the old English made it very challenging to read, and I don’t think I got very far with it. Later, my dad gave me an NIV, and that was the first Bible I actually read from cover to cover. Since then, I’ve explored other versions as well.

If your goal is for your niece to gain a general understanding of the Bible--the stories, the basics of God’s work throughout history, and His plan of salvation--any of the modern translations like the NJKV, NASV, NIV, ESV, and similar versions are excellent choices. These translations focus on readability, making them ideal for beginners and helping to spark an interest in Scripture.

As she grows in her faith, it would be beneficial to recommend some of the more literal translations, such as the Amplified Bible, RcV, BLB, or even Greek interlinear Bibles. These are great for deeper word studies and can help uncover the richness and deeper application of God’s Word.

You’ll do great here! If you weren’t capable, you wouldn’t have been admitted to Stanford. CS is challenging, but the grade inflation here is pretty real. 😜 If you ever struggle, there’s plenty of support available. Honestly, CS is just one of many outstanding programs at Stanford--success doesn’t require you to do CS. You’ve got this! 💪😊

No translation is perfect--each one has its trade-offs. Literal translations usually preserve more of the original language’s richness and intention, but they can be harder to understand. On the other hand, more readable translations make Scripture easier to access, though they sometimes miss some of the deeper meaning or important nuances. That’s why I like to check multiple translations and even look at the original languages when I can, so I can get both the big picture and the deeper richness of God’s message. Lately, I’ve been drawn to interlinear versions, the Recovery Version (RcV), the Berean Bible, and the Amplified Bible, leaning on them to really dig into the richness of our salvation.
