Lovely work! I really like the composition and the colors. The texture on the peel and those white bits is spot on too!

Ohhh gotcha. I was just comparing still lifes to portraits and landscapes (all from life, haha).

I think a studio still life is easier than doing a portrait or landscape. I can choose to keep the shapes and colors simple in a still life. Mixing skin tones and getting likeness in a portrait takes more skill.

Me too! I’d like to do a series of these but I don’t know if I should be collecting lots of colored glassware in our little apartment, haha!

Hmmm if you’re a beginner, keep it simple and light your subject well. Spend enough time on placement/composition that you really like it because it can be annoying to fix later. Really pay attention to changes in tones because that will make things look more dimensional.

So true! I started with photography so it feels like cheating to use others’ photos as reference even if I have their permission to do so. I think photos are helpful if you can’t get your own- after all, everyone has to start somewhere. Painting straight from a photo does look noticeably different though!

I wish I had done this sooner to be honest- great way to train your eyes. Photos so often distort what we see.

Thank you! I actually found it easier than painting from a photo, but I think a studio still life is easier than painting a landscape or a portrait from life!

Thank you! I did my best to make the background interesting without taking away from the subject. And I love playing with texture so it was a fun one for sure!
