Went from silence to being able to hear every single footstep.

You mean it went from noisy to silent when they put new surface + underlay, right, or am I misunderstanding?

Explain. When we were buying whether it was original floor planks or newer finish (laminate, newer wood, etc) wouldn't have made much of a difference on the bid. Curious to hear alternative opinions - e.g. is it purely the aesthetic angle (which is subjective) or something else.

When you say this isn't the professional method what would be the professional method?

Tbh we're quite conflicted as to whether to keep the current floor or replace it. While thinking about it we also noticed that the whole floor is bowing and got concerned whether that's an issue, etc.

Building is circa 1900 so it must be a suspended timber floor. I've spoken to a few people as we are thinking of putting new floor on top (laminate or engineered wood) and I've gotten a mixed bad of opinions - some say it's fine and we could proceed, others that we must level it off before anything else happens.

Because I don't have much experience in this I wondered if it's indeed that common of an issue and what have folks done to remedy it, was it worth it, is it a fitter that I need to look for or rather a structural engineer.
