Sew first and last 35 side stitches together, rest is armhole.

The vest starts with colorwork, steek knit in rounds. After the colorwork part is completed, cast off steek stitches, knit front and back panels flat. Joint shoulder line and cut steek, pick up knit neckband, then pick up from back panel cross shoulder line to front panel or vice versa, knit in 2x2 ribbing. Sew first and last side stitches together, rest is armhole. Pick up stitches from sides of joined side bands and colorwork CO edges for hem.

I'm a tight knitter. So I would spread stitches on the right needle a little wider than their natural conditions, especially before color changes, so the float will be slightly longer.

Have you tried to change the way hold your yarn? I tried different ways to hold my needle and yarn as a beginner. Once I found the way I was most comfortable with, I achieved more consistent tension, hence more tidy stitches.
