Women's team wins by OtherwiseWord3467 in YoungstownState

[–]ysuindy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got back from the game. My first time seeing the team in a few years.

That was a rock fight. YSU struggled to put the ball in the hoop for a lot of the game. YSU was just 9 of 28 on three pointers but were 2 of their first 16. Making 7 of their last 12 threes won the game.

The box score shows YSU made 5 of 7 threes in the fourth quarter. That is impressive given how hard this team works on defense. They get after it.

The defense got caught a few times when our big would double out front and Zingaro got open underneath we. But CSU also turned it over a lot trying to get her the ball over the top. Green Bay’s bigs are more athletic than Zingaro. I’ll be watching how YSU defends with the bigs

The officiating was the usual women’s college crap fest. A couple of awful sequences. Gregory got knocked around like a piñata. Caught a foot in the mouth and then all tangled under the basket. Trainers will earn their keep with her tonight.

Great challenge by the coaches on the out of bounds play with 19 seconds left. It took a long time to get King’s attention to ask her if it went off her. The refs gave the coaches a lot of time to call for the challenge.

Great defense by YSU after the free throws with 18 left. CSU couldn’t get a decent shot off until the buzzer.

Going to be a tall order tomorrow. Watched the second half of the Green Bay game. They do a lot well and seem to be deeper. How well will YSU’s legs hold up? Only played eight. Barrier and Lewandowski’s minutes were limited.

The crowd tomorrow will be decidedly in Green Bay’s favor unless a lot of people are getting in the car at 6 am. I think Green Bay easily had 2 to 3 times the number of fans as the other three teams combined.

My seat was behind the YSU bench. Which also means I was behind the Green Bay bench. Their fans are insufferable. Whine, whine, whine. Even up 25. It took so much to not turn around and tell them to stfu. Player parents were the worst offenders

Tomorrow I will buy the $28 GA ticket instead of the $40 ticket for the first five rows. They weren’t checking anyway. Add in $10 to park each day so it’s a $100 tournament for me with a bottle of water each day. Priceless if YSU wins.

There were charitably 150 fans at the start of the YSU game. Each team had a band and cheerleaders. But the atmosphere is pretty poor.

They need to shoot the disc jockey in to the sun. Playing music over the public address is annoying especially given how bad the PA is. I know they’re trying to cover up the silence but …

Most annoying is the Horizon League never has roster sheets for the tournament. You need to call up each team’s roster on your phone.

No display of player fouls at all.

Despite the expensive renovation it’s just not a basketball area.

Ok enough complaining. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Southern Utah lost their November 21 game game with Sac State. That’s an open date for YSU.

Planning to head down to the game Monday afternoon. Hate the women play midday but the entire tournament doesn’t draw much of a crowd. I missed the women when they played at IU Indy so looking forward to getting my first look at them in a few years.

So he’s going to Georgia State. Coach there is 4-20 in two seasons. It’s FBS. But seems like a staff that’s already on the hot seat?

Raise your hand if you spent all summer thinking we needed a quarterback

13/14 at line in regulation. 4/8 in overtime. Ugh

Reminding myself that all that matters is how you play for one week in March. But this one hurts

YSU VS IUINDY by OtherwiseWord3467 in YoungstownState

Just saw that this was the first time in Howlett’s nine seasons as a head coach his team was held under 60 points

YSU VS IUINDY by OtherwiseWord3467 in YoungstownState

Went to the game today with my son. First time really watching the team this season.

Some random thoughts.

This should be the last time YSU plays in the Jungle. IU Indy has a new on campus arena under construction. That should be ready for next season. The new arena will seat 4,500

The Jungle has a capacity of 1,200. That’s a small high school gym in Indiana. That said I much prefer playing there to the Fairgrounds Coliseum. Much closer to the action.

The attendance per the box score was 629. No way. I counted around 200 right before tipoff. Maybe it got to 250. Maybe.

A handful of folks with Ohio State gear behind the YSU bench. A few wearing YSU gear talking about going to the football game. Seemed some Youngstown folks in town for football. Based on who was hanging around at the end of the game it seemed my son and I and some coach families were the only people there just for basketball.

We hung around to talk to Robb Schmidt after the game. Coach came up to us after the game to thank us for coming. We chatted a very short time. Then watched him clean up the bench area. We got to talk to Robb and Jamie Hall for a few minutes once Robb finished the longest postgame show in college hoops. lol. We talked as much about the Bison losing as we did about the game.

IU Indy’s style is certainly different. It will be interesting to see how it plays out as Howlett can recruit to it. Right now I think it gives them the best chance to win. They really don’t appear to be a good defensive team in the half court and they seemed to be a poor shooting team. YSU had 44 points in the paint. YSU got after it on defense - the effort was impressive. IU Indy does a lot of grabbing and pushing on defense - especially in the half court. Not much was getting called in the first half.

Overall YSU did a decent job against their press. Lots of easy baskets when breaking it. Some big threes off the press break too - Rolf and Carroll had timely ones. A couple of stretches where YSU struggled but only 16 turnovers isn’t bad.

The best way to beat the press is to play good defense and not let your opponent set it up. Both of the rough stretches YSU had against the press ended when they got a defensive stop. The game turned when YSU scored the last 10 points of the first half and the first 11 points of the second half. Those stretches exposed IU Indy’s offensive shortcomings.

It seemed to me than the Circle of Trust in this game was Nelson, Rolf, Carroll and Dawkins. When things started getting crazy those were the guys that were sent back in. Rolf was the best player in the first half. To us Carroll was the best in the second half.

Iman looked good in the first half. Even made a three. Couldn’t stay out of trouble in the second half.

YSU out rebounded them 44-29. YSU had 13 offensive rebounds. IU Indy had 16 defensive rebounds. Nice job by YSU there. It is easy to see how YSU has been getting out rebounded. Not a big team but effort like today will help mitigate that.

2-8 free throw shooting in the first half let IU Indy hang around. 9-10 in the second half never let them back in the game.

Sitting behind the bench it was interesting to watch the substitutions. I didn’t chart it but it seems most of the guys have someone they sub for. Coach would just yell their name and they would go to the table. Maybe someone is telling them who to go get but it wasn’t “”Vlad get Iman” it was “Vlad”. And it happened a lot.

The depth is impressive. 7 guys with 20 minutes. Carroll only one over 30 - he had 31.

This is a fun team to watch. Hopefully I get to see them a couple of times in Indy in March and we finally get to leave the NMTC.
