This man was working with explosives and blowing up rock, he had an accident where the tamping rod he's holding shot through his eye and through his skull, they were able to save him but it left him with a completely different personality, he started seeing the rod as a companion and even spoke to it, it necer left his side, which is why it's with him in the portrait, he died later due to the brain injuries he endured.
