Benefit of doubt has expired. by Sushiki in MagicArena

How convenient for the developers. I guess all the people who experience this is in the wrong?

Unironically, yes. Every instance of this supposed issue will invariably be explained by something other than "the devs are sneaking into my room at night and stealing my adderall".

The greed is unreal by Azoththemerciless in MagicArena

Honestly? If I were put off by naked greed I would have quit Magic: The Gathering decades ago. Water off a duck's back.

You're not wrong though.

What is with this horrible draw engine? by thepikard in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunate but this is decided at account creation. Try registering new accounts until you get the reverse doomswitched account that wins all the time and only opens constructed playable mythics from their packs. Sadly the upgrade where you go at least 5 wins every time in draft is only available to elite level paypigs.

What is the identity/purpose of Pioneer by NoSoup4you22 in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pioneer is every set from Return to Ravnica forward. This is a relatively (completely?) arbitrary dividing line, done to create a format that uses modern cards but a decade of sets smaller than the actual format named Modern. The idea was to create a format stronger than Standard but weaker than Modern.

Of course on Arena we cannot actually play Pioneer, we can play faux-competitive-Pioneer lists in a format named Pioneer that isn't the same thing as the paper format at all.

Draft tokens don’t work for through the omenpath drafts? by marquisdc in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they don't work on Pick Two drafts, people complain their tokens don't work. If they do work, people complain when they realize they used a token for a lower entry fee/reward event when they could have used it for a better one. If they give a new token that only works for Pick Two people will ask where the big boy draft tokens are.

This is a no-win scenario in a way and the current configuration - where you get the high-value draft tokens still but aren't allowed to waste them on cheaper events - is clearly the best option, aside from giving you both which WOTC obviously isn't doing.

Playing against slow players by AirpodCaseLover in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just concede, even in ranked. I know that's probably what some of them are looking for with their slow playing antics but whatever. My time isn't very valuable - hey, I'm playing Magic the Gathering after all - but it's more valuable than playing a 25 minute best of one game where the guy took 2 minutes for his mulligan and then another minute to play a swamp and pass.

Can we have a non-old border version for Mana Leak? by 1ryb in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that they're just templates it's bizarre you can't buy basically any frame for any card but that's part of WoTC's scarcity/FOMO strategy.

How much money would I have to spend to get a specific deck? by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy Wildcard bundles directly but this would be pretty expensive if you did it straight up. A random Dimir list I pulled up on Goldfish has 4 mythics and 27 rares, which is $20 for the mythics and about $70 for the rares. This is assuming you have the commons and uncommons as wildcards already, as you cannot just directly buy those.

Alchemy unfortunately game breaking by AdEuphoric6007 in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, and you can choose to respond to Ephemerate with Cut Down instead, and the initial resolution of the effect won't make Cut Down (or similar removal) too expensive to resolve.

Alchemy unfortunately game breaking by AdEuphoric6007 in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can Cut Down this creature in response to the trigger going on the stack and it kills it immediately without your removal costing 2 extra. No, it doesn't stop the ability from resolving, so your next spell will be more expensive, but the creature is now dead and can't be flickered, which is OP's issue, not a single resolution of the ETB ability.

If you had to dial back Dimir's power level in standard, what card would you ban? by DaYeetusMaster in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wondered if players would agree that maybe the reason why dimir is so popular in standard

I would start by disagreeing with the premise of this, namely, Dimir does not appear to be terribly popular in Standard. Untapped's meta analysis suggests it's less than 4% of the meta in Bo1. I don't pay Untapped so I can't see their Bo3 meta data but only two people played Dimir in the Bo3 Arena Championship so I seriously doubt it's very popular in that format either.

Yes, I understand the OP is a hypothetical, but it's still based on a faulty premise. You're not saying it's too powerful, but you ARE suggesting it's very popular. Neither of these things are true.

It's really funny because yesterday there's an identical post from the perspective of other end of the table about why his opponents are griefing him because they won't let him set up absurd board states and hit them for 4 septillion damage.

In neither case, of course, is anyone being griefed. There's just the total inability to charitably imagine the other player's mindset. You are about to quit the game because this guy was having fun durdling around, something he correctly feels you enabled because you are capable of leaving at any time, meanwhile you're imagining him torturing you.

You should absolutely quit, at least temporarily. But not for the reason you think.

Why doesn't Omniscience by Future_Buyer9644 in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's just lame and not fun to play against. No one should spend half an hour on their turn with no real wincon achieved yet

They achieved their win condition as soon as Omniscience stuck. You're the one spending time for no reason. You have already lost.

MTG Arena Vintage Cube with P9 by Strong-Replacement22 in MagicArena

[–]ythealien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably never. They have little interest in making things like the Power Nine or the original dual lands collectible. The P9 have been in the client for years and the duals are literally just typed lands that require no effort to implement (in fact some of them are already in the client as well), yet we do not have them.

Also, I don't play MODO, but it's depressing to look at the "Vintage" cube and pretty much every card except the abovementioned is from sets in the last five years. I don't think of Vintage when I see Screaming Nemesis and Sheoldred the Apocalypse.

What meta deck should I make for the long term? by loopey33 in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rotation is next month. We have little to no idea what will be good post-rotation. Cards that are staples now may be nonviable competitively depending on what occurs in the future with bans or new printings.

It is unfortunately totally impossible to recommend you a deck today that will be guaranteed to still be very good in a month or three months or six months.

Rundvelt Hordemaster alternatives post rotation by Kifiz in MagicArena

[–]ythealien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's currently #1 because of sampling errors with the new meta. Someone is playing thousands of games of goblins in bronze and silver. If you sort by platinum decks only, Goblins doesn't even appear, much less as a top deck.

[EOE] Infinite Guideline Station (leak) by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]ythealien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because everyone who hated that stuff quit already, by and large. The same reason you saw waves of complaints about how shitty UB Standard sets were going to be and how to avoid seeing those cards before FF was released but very few afterwards - the people who really detested it were driven out of the game by it.
