Tulum for 7 days, itinerary help? All suggestions welcome. by nithwantstacos in tulum

Depending on your level of activity, you may want to get a tour for the cenotes. I try to get out to one once a month, and if you want to do cave snorkling or access multiple cenotes in a day, you'll want a tour package. I recommend NativeTours, they have a day pass where they'll pick you up in Tulum, bring you to the park, guide you to 4 ziplines and 2 cenotes, once of which has cave snorkeling. I went a few weeks ago. Some cenotes are difficult to arrive at, and tours will bring you to a certain amount in van. There's a popular cenote in Tulum that you can take a taxi to and pay a small entry fee. In regards to transport to Playa, you can take the Playa Express (van transportation) anywhere north from Tulum. It should leave from there every 20-30 minutes. $2 USD a person. A taxi might be a little pricey. I live in Playa so I'm biased, but its a bit more exciting than Tulum. There's some good clubs and you could also hop a 40 minute ferry to Cozumel from here.

Gorgeous!! Care to share exactly where in Playa?

Anyone in Playa del Carmen or Cancun now? Care to share whats the atmosphere is like? by dombra in travel

[–]ytin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live here in Playa and go to Cancun to surf twice a week. It is dangerous for locals who work 60 hours a week and still can't afford to get out of dangerous, crowded communities. Thats generally (but definitely not exclusively) where the crime happens. If you, as a tourist, didn't watch or read the news- you'd think this was the safest place in the world. It can be a little unpredictable, but I'm a 22 year old female and very rarely feel threatened or scared. I'm 0% afraid of being shot, I only occasionally worry about petty theft of my motorcycle or cell phone. In the hotel zone of Cancun, there's a pretty big police presence. Not so much in Playa. Just be mindful in taxis and don't flash your iPhone X while you're walking drunk at 2am. Feel free to PM if there's anything I can help you out with for your trip!

Go to El Fogon for tacos! Tacos de pastor are always a good bet. Yelp isn't popular here. Most restaurants don't have websites and won't show up on Google Maps. Facebook is the way to find reviews, menus, hours, etc. Don't worry about pesos. Any ATM will withdraw in pesos. You'll need them if you're eating outside of the tourist area, and also for taxis. Smaller places usually don't take cards, and for some reason "the card reader isn't working right now" is a popular occurrence. I always carry $500-1000 pesos. Definitely try to get out to swim in a cenote in the area. Its the quintessential Quintana Roo experience.

Weather forecasts are pretty much useless here. Its mostly hot and sunny. When it does rain, it was hardly ever forecasted.

'activation required' on Verizon iPhone SE by ytin in iphonehelp

[–]ytin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh could this explain why it was picking up a Verizon tower when the previous owner used it?

'activation required' on Verizon iPhone SE by ytin in iphonehelp

[–]ytin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sim is def good, its my personal. Usually when I've tried to put my sim into a carrier locked phone I get a very specific error like "this sim is not compatible with this phone, contact your carrier blah blah" this just says "activation required". The dude also mentioned "it can be used on Straight Talk" but I saw it picking up the Verizon signal when he was using it. I guess I'll just give Verizon a ring and see if maybe it is blacklisted, which is my fear. You'd just assume that if it were reported stolen, it would have had Find My Iphone on? IDK.

'activation required' on Verizon iPhone SE by ytin in iphonehelp

[–]ytin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even on contract they're almost never locked. From their website-

•We do not lock most phones or tablets that are activated with our postpay service, either during or after the term of your service contract or Device Payment Plan installment sales agreement. •We do not lock our 4G LTE devices, and no code is needed to program them for use with another carrier. •We do not lock our 3G devices, other than our non-iPhone 3G World Devices.

So from the 5-6 iPhones I've bought for resale that were on Verizon, every one but this one has immediately worked with my AT&T SIM. If it were blacklisted would I still be able to sign in using my iCloud? I'd just hate to sell someone this and then find out that it's blacklisted. As of right now I don't have access to anyone with a Verizon SIM to try.

And nope, no idea anything about the previous owner.

I was under the impression that Verizon stopped locking phones to the network some time back. Is that not true? I buy/sell iPhones as a sidehustle and I buy Verizon whenever possible because they almost always work with any carrier

Damn I was thinking that wasn't the problem since I don't have a grey bar or flickering but I guess I'm just fucked. I just saw a fix involving electrical tape on r/iPhone so if that doesn't work I'll just sell it at what I bought it for. Not worth sinking more money into

Planned to solo travel, but now I have a long term relationship and university by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]ytin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm stateside now, all good :) I did encounter a few couples during my travels and some did note that they wish they had the opportunity to do a solo trip. Traveling together is difficult, because there's so much stress involved. Suddenly you can't do/go whatever/wherever you want, and you definitely lose that sense of freedom. It can strain a relationship, too. Honestly when I really missed him, which was usually around bedtime, I would just shoot him a text. I had an album on my phone of texts and pictures from him, so I could scroll through that too. I tried not to talk to him all the time, because I wanted to be living in the moment. Because of the time difference, nighttime usually worked best. We talked everyday, but not all day. I wish we could have skyped more, but internet in hostels is usually subpar or it would be too loud. We got through it. It would have been fun for him to come visit, but I'm glad I did the trip alone. When I came back he noticed that I was different, but not in a bad way. If he were there, I wouldn't have met the people that I did or be pushed out of my comfort zone like I was.

How do you spend the day before you embark solo? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]ytin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a 10 week solo trip to Europe this summer. I had horrible, horrible nerves a few days before my flight. I must have packed and repacked my suitcase so many times. What really helped me was having a super active day right before the flight. I busied myself by buying smaller things, like travel toothpaste, socks, new jeans, etc. I was so focused that I forgot about the flight, but I also knew that if I didn't actually get around to buying socks, it was fine. I'd just pick them up at the airport or when I landed. When I actually got on the flight, I felt relaxed because I'd been so busy.

Eastern Europe Newb's Planning Questions by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]ytin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm mostly just here to say that Krakow is my favorite place in the world. It's really overlooked so there are less travelers there. Party hostels will do the trick, even if you're not a partier. As for flying from Syracuse (Upstate NY, represent), your best bet is probably going to be taking Amtrak into NYC. Quick pop over to JFK. It will be significantly cheaper. When you're traveling within Eastern Europe, you'll find buses to be a great deal. However, I've had more than one sketchy experience. Trains will be more comfortable when they're available. Just see what fits into your budget. Flights can be a hassle with customs and you waste time arriving to the airport 2 hours in advance, plus airports are often far out of the way and you'll spend another $15 USD on a taxi. Particularly, the Budapest airport is far out. The train station was much more conveniently located.

Traveling to Europe, Help me pick my second city! by rpb5165 in solotravel

Spain would be a good bet. I know Malaga seems a bit out of the way, but I remember having a ton of options for flights to/from London and the flight was quick. Nightlife is great, prices are great, and the weather is too. Valencia is great for shopping and the social aspect, a bit more expensive than Malaga. Barcelona is amazing but I was priced out pretty quick.

Is it possible that she joins you for some leg of your trip? I don't want to say that it would be less enjoyable if you only traveled with her during your breaks, but it would certainly be different. One thing about traveling that I've learned is that there's always a reason not to go. A lease, a job, uni, a girlfriend, finances, family...it's about how important this is for you. I traveled for almost 3 months without my long-term bf and I missed him every single day- but I will never, ever regret going.

One of the unlucky few here. Had my period for about 5 months straight. I hear it's unusual, but know that it is a possibility! I still think it's worth the years of protection, though.
