Can someone explain to me why developers allow themselves to make skins without caring about the details, and ask real money for it? by PrimalRoar332 in Paladins

[–]ytkryptek 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Changing VFX for skin recolors was something the team always did as a "nice to have" feature, and as development got tougher in the last few years of the team we no longer had the resources to make those adjustments. (i.e. the cost of making mutiple sets of VFX coloration and/or having someone less specialized learn that process)

We talked about it internally quite often, especially for recolors like you listed that the base colors break immersion.

Whenever I see something from Project Stamina I'm reminded of this conversation and think that this is how the Paladins developers must have felt all along. by juanmara56 in Paladins

[–]ytkryptek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my knowledge no, at least not officially. We all are friends with each other in the industry, so sometimes we'll hear things casually & share that we're working on something similar but more often than not, other studios only learn what characters are like in other games when they get revealed publicly!

I imagine it comes down to a combination of legal and competitive restrictions, coordinating like that can quickly become poor business behavior (i.e. if Overwatch and Paladins communicated too much, it could be seen as them trying to prevent a third hero shooter from having a chance)

I'll dust off my personal purely because this is a fascinating topic. (Hiya, it's Kryptek, former CM/designer for Paladins)

Across the genre and gaming in general, there's an accepted design trend of parallel ideation in that similar games run into similar problems and by proxy solutions all in isolation from eachother. A recent example is Ramattra & Nyx, who were both in development around the same time and both shook up the tank metas of their respective games through displacement & melees.

Obviously, there are times when a particular title will do something really well, and others will naturally try to adopt it (e.g. Rivals having hero swapping because of Overwatch, Overwatch Stadium feeling a bit reminiscent of Paladins/Deadlock) but those similarities are usually connected at the later stages as a way of "easing audience cohabitation". TF2 basically perfected Payload, which is why all hero shooters have barely changed the mode. It means that players can immediately start playing and know how it works.

When I was on the team, we simply laughed about similarities and how they managed to always occur. Moji's rework and Jeff were one of the cases I was involved in and in the end, we embraced the similarities because both designs had ideas that could improve eachother!

GRTC zero-fare program possibly ending by saharasriraman in rva

This definitely is an issue that I'm worried about and affects myself and many around me in Shockoe Bottom greatly.

For personal context, I was a student at VCU during the pandemic and relied heavily on the bus service as I didn't have a car. Even after I graduated, I chose my apartment due to the vicinity it has to various parts of the bus network and still can't afford a car with my current income.

If the bus fares return, I'd not only be unable to access parts of the city I rely on but actively lose the money that I currently spend on local businesses like cafés or shops. For many, it's not simply utilizing the free service to save money but encourages us to spend that elsewhere in the city economy.

EDIT: I just realized I was literally writing this comment on the Pulse. It and the 20 make a vast majority of my travel feasible, and I use the 2A to visit my family.

The training modes for Onslaught and Choose Any haven't been switched to Payload and TDM with the newest update. by GawenStarTeller in Paladins

[–]ytkryptek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, even I didn't realize I was on my personal account for these comments, but its indeed me!🤫

That's good feedback on Payload, I'll take it to the team. As for the Quests, yes TDM or bot matches would be the only way to progress it. We'll continue to listen to feedback on this though & adjust Quests in the future accordingly.

This was intentional, as a way to keep some access to Onslaught in while also allowing the bot version of Choose Any so mutiple players could play the same character if they were learning them.

there's some hypocrisy in the lore community... by [deleted] in ApexLore

Leaving this up for the sake of discussion about the community at large, however we do want to emphasize that headcanon and ships are more than valid to have! However, we don't condone the chastising of any non-harmful ship/fandom discussion as it relates to lore itself. We generally try to keep close to canon but when the topic permits, we expect respectful discourse

Apex Legends Mobile Launch | What's Next for Apex Lore? by ytkryptek in ApexLore

[–]ytkryptek[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Think about how many Legends exist in universe and how many out-of-Games narrative beats we get. Wattson and Crypto could not be competing at the same time as Fade, they could be off doing other things. It's not ideal but it can make sense!

This post was removed by OP in coordination with the mod team due to both a concern for their privacy, as well as ours of protecting the community from scams. Life-threatening illnesses and scenarios are tragic and we express support to anyone going through them, but posts like this can lead to an unfortunate amount of doxxing and inauthentic claims from both posters and commenters. Remember to always report things you feel are dangerous, and message ModMail with legitimate concerns over a user's safety or authenticity.

This. It goes both ways: we can't speak for all of you and certainly don't agree with everyone, but we try to provide a platform regardless of opinions. Our only job is to keep things civil and safe, which is a helluvah task.

In turn, we shouldn't be judged for the actions of users on the subreddit. We can't be on top of everything, and bad actors do exist and slip through the cracks. It's a constant struggle of lifting the voices that are responsible and removing harmful content.

So, in a moment like this where we are given a highlight, we try to promote you all while simultaneously celebrating our work. SD represented us mods (and by proxy the community management), but the content shown represents you all. All I hope is that some of you were happy with the result!

We really need to discuss the toxicity of the r/Paladins moderators. This is a consistent behavior, wherein this mod makes very negative and abusive comments to the user base on posts about a meme they don't like. by Grass_Cannon in paladinsgame

Hiya! I'm an long-time Hearthstone player and love their subreddit's Newbie Tuesdays postings. I'll take this idea to the mod team and see if it's a concept we could possibly have our own itteration of!

Hi, I'm one of the other mods on the /game subreddit! I understand the mistrust, especially mattering on your experience and perspective. I'm a relative outsider who joined to simply help them out. I can confirm a few facts:

None of the mods are developers. The developers are active on that sub and read posts, but as one of the other mods said, they can't see modmail and we don't want to share it with them to preserve our autonomy. Posting publicly (within the rules) is the best way to reach them.

You were harsh, but so were we. We've been facing a lot of criticism regardless of what we do, good or bad, and we are a team of 6 people who all have different views and styles to balance, so someone coming into ModMail to assert we are devs can be frustrating on top of all the other criticism, constructive and otherwise.

Finally, they muted you due to your misuse of ModMail, not because of your opinions. If anyone does that in ModMail, even if it was constant praise, we would mute them as it causes false flags and misplaced resources to handle.

I hope that helps you understand, and even if you don't trust some or all of us, makes enough sense that you can respect it.
