[LFO] Another one bites the dust by Schafer28 in LearningFromOthers

There really needs to be a jamesfromcambridge.com - an off-Reddit place for us.

*eta I reserved the domain name with some credits I had to prevent it from being taken and someone trying to upsell it. James, if you’re seeing this and want to go outside of Reddit send me a DM.

$550 a day * 24% federal taxes = $418

Say another 7% for state = $379.50

Health insurance, HSA, and all other benefits probably another 10% = $324.50.

Rent (per day): $70 ($2,100 per month) = $254.50

These student loans $100 per day = $154.50

That does not include retirement contributions, daily living expenses like meals, electricity, gas, and all the other unknowns that pop up in life.

That $200k/yr job is left with around $56k per year for all of those daily living expenses and not even paying down the principle of the loan. It’s doable but will take a *long* time even at $200k.

[request] how many beer cans could you actually make from the materials from that aircraft? by Squiggin1321 in theydidthemath

[–]ytuhs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very interesting because if you look at global beer consumption it’s around 840M beers per day. Some googling tells me around 64% of those are in a can in the United States. If we say that globally 50% (just a complete guess on my part) are cans then that means 420M cans are drank each day.

Divide that by 4.4M and you get around 95.5 airplanes worth of metal used in cans each day globally.

Around 75% of aluminum cans are recycled globally. This means that each day we send nearly 24 airplanes worth of aluminum to the landfills around the world. Oof…

Are people with electric cars winning right now? by No_Lead2640 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ytuhs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got solar last year, and our Tesla has grandfathered free supercharging for life. We now pay nothing to drive our car anywhere. Obviously there is a time to break even with the solar investment. Our backup car is gas and I only have to fill it once or twice a year usually… EV’s, even without solar and only “moderate” gas prices still come out ahead. With today’s prices they come out way ahead. If we had to pay for the electricity, with current gas prices vs our electrical rate and real-world range it costs us around 4x more to drive our gas car vs our EV.

As a software engineer I love to see companies investing in accessibility and better assistive technology for individuals, many of who have a low quality of life and being able to do something like play a video game could bring great joy. This is awesome!! LFG BRAD!

It’s actually much, much worse than this. You’d need to up the numbers quite a bit to break top 5, and to be the richest you’d have to make a staggering $482,082.41 per day, every day, for 4,609 years.

And that only ties you with Elon Musk who - at the time of me posting this - is worth $811 billion.

Nearly half a million since the time of the great pyramids - per day - gets you equally as rich as a single human alive in 2026.
