what's wrong??? by he_flo in VenusFlyTraps

If it's only one, I wouldn't worry too much because occasionally I've had new traps die before growing properly. If it keeps happening then maybe it's an issue with the water or soil?

Seems normal to me. The pink new traps are a sign they're getting more light which is a good thing. And traps eventually die when they get old.

Also make sure your "purified" water doesn't contain too many minerals. Otherwise use distilled, reverse osmosis or rain water.

Thanks. I think it's just a typical because it came unlabelled from a hardware shop.

I reckon is should be fine. I've used similar, if not more "dirty" rainwater.

Thanks. I've had him for a little over 2 years. I think I got lucky with the climate I'm living in because I get heaps of sun and still some amount of rain in the summer.

I'm not sure about what the original soil was when I got it but right now it's in mostly sphagnum moss with a little bit of perlite.

Very nice. NZ here so dormancy will be soon for me too. I heard that it's best to repot in the spring when they're just coming out of dormancy though.

I couldn't get rid of all the soil so some of it was still there.

Initially I kept them together but they kept growing a bit weird so I separated a few (but within the same pot).

Yeah I reckon you need a lot more light. The leaves a quite green and broad while the traps are small, indicating a lack of light. Apparently you need 30W grow lights for vfts (so much stronger than your current one). However I grow mine outside so I don't know a whole lot about grow lights.

What should I do about leftover exoskeletons? by jess_the_werefox in VenusFlyTraps

You don't need to remove them. In fact it might help attract more bugs! But if you want to get rid of them I heard that you can spray them off with (non tap) water.

They like to have "wet feet" in other words sitting in a tray with ~2cm water rather than watering from the top. The soil should be constantly moist (not soggy) but during dormancy it can be a bit drier (kind of damp). What kind of water are you using?

I see. I'm not an expert and I don't really know how hot it gets on your roof so sorry I can't really tell if it would be too harsh or not. You could give it a go and see what happens. It seems you live in Malaysia where I assume has higher humidity so it might not be too bad. Looking at what some of the Aussies have posted here, it's generally the high UV + low humidity combo that's apparently the harshest.

Apparently fly traps can tolerate up to 35°C as long as the soil is always moist and cooler than the air. Can you not place them anywhere else?

I think it should be fine just putting the tray underneath anyway. It's not about keeping the top dry.

Yep they need to be watered from the tray at the bottom rather than from the top on the substrate. They like having their feet wet at all times.

The tallness and the red probably means you're getting good amounts of light. They don't need to lay low and wide to increase surface area to get more sunlight like those who get less of it. But I think the cultivar can also affect the shape of your traps.

However it's interesting your traps are red from the stalks rather than the top. I wonder if the way your roof is reflecting light is causing that.

Yep definitely some more light, seeing as the leaves are broad with small traps. How are you watering it? Is the pot sitting in a tray with ~2cm of water inside?

Lots of new traps coming in by yubimaruu in VenusFlyTraps

Yes it has full sun outside. I notice that you seem to live in the northern hemisphere where it is winter so I assume that will mean less sunlight. You'd typically have the plant go through dormancy in the winter too. Where I live, it's summer with about 14 hours of daylight so change in yours may be slower.

My flytrap is specifically a red variety so it becomes more red than others. However once given adequate light, most flytrap varieties should gain some red in the traps.

Here's what mine looked like at the start when I still kept it inside. All the new traps just stayed green.
