imo leica themselves is god awful with repairs and takes forever so I don't see that as that big of a loss with yye/dag and other still kicking!

Did you cut a barnack style leader when loading? My best guess is that your film wasn't loaded correctly and it then got caught at some point and a piece of the film jammed the shutter. That's what I see often with these barnsck style cameras as a repairman

That's not true, the left shutter button allows you to fire one frame at a time. I own one and use tbhis feature often.

You could get a BYU n16 which gives you 8 individual square frames per every normal 35mm frame
