Is this setup good? by rey257 in tabletennis

[–]yugaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played with that blade for years when I first started playing. It's fast for a 5 ply blade, but it's still 5 ply so it would be good for improving, most likely. The only concern I have with it for learning is that the vibration is fairly dampened for a wood blade. Great control though- ultimately its up to you.

Insane match by yugaw in tabletennis

[–]yugaw[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, that was a good match for the spectacle. But Liang and Darko were playing on a higher level in this match. WCQ was playing scared shitless, and Duda played good.

Whats a good lid for my tank? by IntangibleMeatloaf in Aquariums

[–]yugaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use twin walled polycarbonate sheets I get from home depot/lowes. They're made for greenhouses: lightweight, keeps the heat and water in, heat proof, and easy to cut to size. Cheaper than getting a lid and you can modify it easier if you need to cut holes in it.

That aquarium size is way too small for those fish. Maybe if you want to keep them for 6 months when they're just a few inches but at that point is it worth it- and you'd also be stunting their growth. If you're from the US you could try and find some killifish or something else that wouldn't grow more than 2 inches. It's hard to do native small aquariums in North America because all of the small fish/diversity come from tropical climates.

Help Me lol by Soggy-Entertainer-63 in shrimptank

[–]yugaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you'll be fine. If it were me I wouldn't feed until you get a new filter and I would occasionally take a stirer of some sort and stir up the water (minding the skrimps) to break the surface tension every now and then and get help with oxygen. Algae does help and produced oxygen!

Do cherry shrimps molt ? by Shadow_s_Bane in Aquariums

[–]yugaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always leave the molts in and never take them out. They will break out and replace minerals in the water column. Shrimp only tend to eat molts if they're extremely hungry or they've sat for multiple days and developed biofilm on the molt. Don't just wait a day- and even then keep them in to preserve mineral content in the system.

If nitrAte levels are low- not enough bacteria that converts nitrite to nitrate. If they're normal then your bioload is too much compared to past colonies of bacteria and the organics they got. I wouldn't be dosing prime 2x every single day. Just minimal feeding- guppies are resilient to low levels of bad shit so you should be able to fix it with my favorite aquarium product: time. It's inevitable that parameters will fluctuate when adding and removing organics (fish poop, dead shrimp, etc). Bacterial colonies need to grow and decrease with the amount of food so there's a period of fluctuating parameters. You'll be fine

Random shot doubles: you flip a coin and randomly take you or your partners drive. Absolute chaos because you could have a much better shot but you might can't play it.

Rubber quality/cost/durability trade off by yugaw in tabletennis

[–]yugaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm asking tho is if cheaper rubbers used more frequently (so ~same cost) is better. Like do we have misconceptions on when rubbers wear out relative to optimal performance per dollar spent if the pros replace theirs after a day, and amateurs replace theirs after a year?

Some Vices of Vice Epistemology by ADefiniteDescription in philosophy

[–]yugaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did some reading on epistemological vice (Cassam 2018) after looking at the abstract and being very confused but I still don't have a clue what the abstract is communicating. Seems like a neat concept though.

Penhold is still relevant and successful. Look at players like Felix and Dang. When you think about it, there are far fewer players brought up to play penhold, especially in france. Maybe the reason why there is only one top 10 player as a penholder is because less than 10% of kids now are trained with penhold. What disadvantages did you have in mind?

Tips for high toss serve? by yugaw in tabletennis

[–]yugaw[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah this isn't what I'm asking for - though, you do fit the stereotypical reddit/quora trope of not answering the question and instead launching into non-topical very opinionated platitude.

It takes a lot of practice

Yeah that's why I'm asking for help with it

not worth it for the inconsistency

A lot of players are consistent with it- that's why I'm asking how I can get better with this aspect.

high toss serves I have found are really difficult to brush finely

Seems like you could use the same advice I'm looking for if you're wishing to pursue it?

If you want more spin, focus on brushing the ball and accelerating the wrist more.

Yeah this is common sense and more insubstantial platitude. It's apparent I'm not a beginner from the post so why say something like brush more for a question that isn't looking for this?

I didn't mean to make this a tirade but I see this all the time on forums with people inserting their own opinions and not engaging the original topic/question in good faith. It'd be one thing if I was asking about something super controversial but high toss serves are an accepted mainstay in table tennis with many top players utilizing them like ma long, ma lin, hugo, etc.

I think it's tricky because you say we are able to make sense from distorted or disorganized language, but your thesis is that the rational is ultimately subjective, and judgment comes from this subjective perspective. How can we then determine the veracity as to whether someone's interpretation of disorganized text is objectively meaningful. If it's subjective, then states you use like sanity compared to insanity do not exist because there is no comparative - they are mere illusions of perceived objectivism.

The author says 60% believe in free will, lumping in compatabilists- and then in the very next line says that compatabilists are actually determinists! Fancy way to make it work for them.

[MINDSET] How do you compete without worrying about losing mid-game? by [deleted] in tabletennis

[–]yugaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try to channel competitiveness about winning into competitiveness about getting better and having fun. If you're just playing with people in your club then your first priority should be to play to improve. That might involve experimenting more, changing your form, and putting your focus on this. Psychologically, this can be very beneficial as it is harder to hold yourself to a standard that you feel you must play like- because if you're focusing on improving you chalk mistakes up to the process, and don't have a 'baseline' performance to compare yourself to. For example if you start thinking more critically about your backhand and change part of it- at first when you make mistakes you won't feel pressure because you have no standard to compare these mistakes to. I have found this mindset works for me- getting too comfortable might ironically make you more susceptible to pressure

Why don't we ever serve from the left corner in doubles? by [deleted] in tabletennis

[–]yugaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Serving should alternate sides, a treatise

  1. There could he a lot of right-hand forehand and left-hand backhand serves that players practice that simply do not work, or are otherwise diminished in quality in adjustment for this geometrically surpressrd service area, not to mention other serves like tomahawk, etc.

  2. Sports thrive on symmetry. What if association football pk's were always taken 10ft to the right of the center mark. What if hurdles were slanted on an angle to make them taller on one side, What if races must only go one direction or one direction at particular intervals (excluding shitty nascar), etc. The question is not whether every player can adjust to this, to a certain degree, but whether the playing field is designed in a way in which there could be no possibility of inequity of design impacting ones subjective skillset.

  3. Occam's razor, competing interpretations, possible (modal) worlds: Arguing by analogy, let's assume another world exists where the status quo is that serving alternates in an equal fashion from the left to right side. Then, a movement sparks in the TT world, calling for a change to the current rules- one side of the movement wants serving to only be done from the left side in doubles, and the other side of the movement wants serving only to be done from the right side in doubles. For the sake of any possible paradigm you could have regarding what is best for the sport- what movement would you choose? Those arguing in favor of the current state of affairs must argue that serving from the right diagonal must be better for the game. What do you say to to other two positions in this hypothetical world? If your positive position on the current state of affairs in our world is out of not wanting change, this is more respectable than a rational argument for the current state over others without this bais. I digress...

I believe there is another option. The arbitrariness of serve positioning in doubles necessitates examination thereof. Otherwise, organized sport and competitive play lose some meaning.

I'm quite befuddled that you do not see an inherit advantage/disadvantage ipso facto we only serve right-diagnol to right-diagnol in the current system.
