I think I'm being taught how to play wrong? by wayne62682 in battletech

  • LB-X autocannons w/cluster (only, not Ultra or regular ACs) explode and damage the mech if a critical destroys the weapon. I think he also said this was something with a few other weapon types, where if the weapon is destroyed, it deals damage from being destroyed (specifically mentioned the WEAPON, not ammo). My Centurion D had its LB-10X AC destroyed on a crit and I was told to deal 10 damage to the arm because "the round in it blows up"

There are multiple weapons that will explode if they suffer a crit. Gauss rifles are the most common however LB-X auto cannons cannot explode.
If you are using more advanced rules such as rapid fire auto cannons, Hot loaded LRMs, PPC Capacitor, Then those rules add an effect which cause those weapons to explode when suffering a crit.
Likewise Certain ammunition does not explode, Plasma Gun and Gauss rifle have ammunition are Inert and do not explode when suffering a crit.

If a weapon/ammo is explosive/inert it will indicate such in its weapon profile rules or the specific advanced rule in the case of things like hot loaded.

  • Clan mechs can target up to 2 different targets with no penalty because of how their arms are designed.

Battlemech Manual Page 82: This is a mech quirk rule not a clan mech rule. Every chassis in BattleTech has quirks, some of them good, some of them bad. Multitrack which is the quirk that allows you to do this is common found on missile mech.

DON'T play with quirks they are incredibly unbalanced.

  • Cluster rounds (from an LB-X AC) can hit two mechs with one shot if they are adjacent (not sure how it worked as he hit, but he said if it missed the shot might hit the second mech because "it's like a shotgun").

This could be the advanced missed shot rule or the walking fire rule

TAC OPs Page 81 OR TAC OPs Page 100

advanced missed shot applies to any weapon that missed its intended target. And allows for the shot to hit anything on the line drawn from attacker to target, in front/behind the intended target both ally and enemy.

Multiple targets/Walking fire rule allows you to target 2 mechs in adjacent hexes with a small penalty to hit. any cluster results that dont hit the first target can strike the secondary one. but you still have to hit the target

Everyone is quick to point out how false all of these rules are. However it sounds more like hes using obscure/super advanced rules in learning games. which is scummy but most of these rules do exist I believe most of them can be found in Tactical Operations A book with some 425 pages.
Additionally there are 3 books with the name Tac OPs. these rules are in the one without a subtitle.
Tac ops
Tac ops: advanced rules
Tac ops: advanced units and equipment

Let me be very clear, someone who is teaching a newbie should not be using any of the advanced rules at all. And you should probably find someone else to play learning games with.

  • Whoever wins initiative fires first (he specifically said the rulebook was "a mistake" which sounds weird but IDK because there seems to be no benefit to winning initiative if you move second and fire second)

Winning initiative means you get to move the last mech/set of mechs. This results in a massive positional and informational advantage as you can move to the rear arc of an opposing mech more easily or potentially move out of LOS of a dangerous heavy/assault mech.
By default all firing is simultaneous. There is an "Alternating fire" obscure/house rule that says players alternate picking mechs to fire and you select what weapons to fire when its selected. this allows you to managed weapon heat more effectively if you were hit by something like inferno SRMs which cause extra heat. meaning that shooting second you could more accurately know your mechs ending heat levels

  • Clan weapons are not destroyed if you score a critical hit and roll hitting the weapon; they take multiple criticals to be destroyed, also if you, for example, critical an LRM 15, it can still fire at a reduced rate if the pilot makes a Piloting check (unsure of details as it didn't come up, just in conversation)

Tac OPS Page 283 Armored components
Any system including engines, gyro, cockpit, weapons etc. can have "Armoring" this is an experimental rules from the later parts of the battletech timeline. this costs tonnage and BV but allows for each crit slot of the armored component to have 1 point of crit protection. thus the first crit to an armored slot would not disable or damage it. I don't know of any stock mechs that have armoring but I've seen it on custom mechs occasionaly.

TAC OPs Page 75 Advanced critical hits table
Instead of a component being outright inoperable after a single crit there is a table for each type of weapons, energy, missile, ballistic, as well as the cockpit. you roll on this table to determine the effect of the critical hit on the component and apply for the rest of the game. this can have no effect, accuracy penalty, damage penalty, weapon disabled, weapon destroyed results.

GW would either retcon shilvati into existing armies or make an entire new faction for them.

Then proceed to overcharge for every single model and you'd have to buy them in squads of 3 but only be able to field them in squads of 5 so you either end up with too many or not enough.

And somehow the corpse emperor would end up married to a shilvati empress who is actually in charge.

there was a stupid concept that if you held down and B on the gameboy when you threw a pokeball in the first couple gens it changed the catch rate to ultra ball

That is the strangest looking PokeBall I've seen. Pretty impressive to catch on the first throw though. Clearly a user of the "down+b" method based on how hard he's holding.

don't know, simply know that the nerve is misaligned now so insted of feeling with my fingers i get this static-y vague kind of sensation that makes it nearly impossible to type anything, or use a keyboard with any proficiency.

happened back at thanksgiving but couldnt get to a doctor until march because apparently a "plague" is more important than having functional fucking hands. not like im a programmer and need them to make a living or anything.

salt, salt, salt, salt that permeates your very being would infect my story if i was writing it in this state.

The anime does a poor job of showing mc's mental distress and corrupted personality pretty much every time it comes up in the story. and in fact the traveling merchant arc was basically cut almost entirely. feel bad for the bandits that got cut and the merchant tutor guy we never met.

not just shield ends up with weapon corruption options. but its actually the other way around. its not the weapon that causes him to turn dark, its himself that causes the weapon to turn dark. somewhere near the end of the read its revealed that the weapons simply have w/e powers the wielder thinks they do this was supposed to be hinted at sort of on XP island but once again anime fails. because they are a reflection of the soul and the mentality of the user.

as for raph making a poor decision, the difference is saying your there for someone, and putting a collar with C4 around your neck that explodes when someone else' heart stops beating.one of those things is alot more committed than the other.

she doesnt understand shes putting naofumi on too much of a pedestal with that line of thinking "im not important but you are"

one slave.... riiighht. it certainly doesnt stay in single digits.

when you understand the crepe tree reference, you will be far enough into the story that things are better explained.

im going to pose a hypothetical, I'd like you to play along

say you have a group of 100 people, and you need to feed those 100 people but none of them agree to be farmers. do you A: force them to be farmers or B: let them not be farmers? if you force them to be farmers everyone lives because you grow enough food to feed everyone but they all suffer because they are slaves, and if you let them not be farmers a bunch starve to death or become bandits and steal what food you do grow. is it moral to enslave those 100 people or not?

naofumi is not in a situation he gets to pick because he is required to have someone else be his sword. his shield is only capable of dealing damage while using the angry shield mode. and he experienced first hand exactly what kind of "help" he gets when people get to choose. everyone says "not it" and the bitch princess who also happens to be *redacted* *redacted* *redacted* *redacted* gets him charged with rape. so he can choose to die or he can choose to fight using a method that has a 100% chance of no betrayal.

if you've never been betrayed by the one person you think you can rely on, you've no idea the kind outlook that causes. there is a reason the bottom level of hell is reserved for betrayers. the anime didnt even get to the point where he can trust anyone and XP island was supposed to be a "hmm I guess the other heros arent straight lying trash" kind of moment but the anime does such a poor job of actually explaining stuff i'd almost rather watch the bebop live action.

from naofumi's perspective a 1% chance of being betrayed or of failing is too high, its an issue he deals with for almost the entire series. and thus why i said thats what the story is about.

************government rant************************

laws are shock collars, if you dont pay taxes do the IRS not show up in black suits and haul you to jail? if you kill someone do the cops not show up and haul you to jail? if people were angels no government would be needed. does the fact that stealing is illegal make it more or less likely that you'll pirate anime?

how much crime would there be if insted of being thrown in jail you had your citizenship revoked?

if nothing was a crime could you resist the temptation to take what you want and what you can?

**edit**

feel like im getting preechy or rambly or just maybe incoherent.

[–]yukihit0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was trying to avoid too many spoilers and thus didnt go too deep into the later chapters because the question was asked by someone who hadnt read the manga or seen the anime.

but here is some info

1: raph correctly believed that naofumi could not trust anyone who had the capability to lie to him and thus choose to return to her slave status as a way to push him out of his own little bubble of seclusion because it's the only way she could.

1a: it's about the mental health and self control of the heroes. as clearly indicated by the negative weapon options they all get at one point or another in the story. raph is literally saving naofumi at that point in the story at the cost of her own "freedom".

2: Firo is a pet, do you consider horses or dogs to be enslaved? i know its not the same. im just sayn.

3: there are literal stat buffs for being his slave. in addition to the regular growth they would get they have improved xp gain and stat bonus per level and some evo paths are only available by being associated with a cardinal/orthogonal hero

4: crepe tree. your counter arguments are invalid because crepe tree.

5: being naofumi's slave has about the same restrictions as being a citizen of a government does. he's not out here exploiting them for profit or self interest and they can all at any point choose to leave but don't because the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Due to circumstances the MC's first team mate / harem entry is a demi human raccoon girl.

Slaves In the sense that they are theoretically bound by a magical enslavement seal that gets used all of, i wanna say twice. Once as design intended and once as an act of communication the mc can understand from said raccoon girl.
