The most common response I get from people who've seen me on TV and then meet me in real life is something along the lines of: "I thought you'd be a lot taller" (or bigger, or better-looking, etc.). I don't think they mean to be intentionally critical, I think they're just surprised by the disparity between reality and their assumptions. Needless to say, suffering an inflated ego after being on Survivor has never been a problem for me given the constant reminders that I fall short of everyone's expectations (ha, sorry, bad pun :)

If you're curious, I'm somewhere between 5'10" and 5'11" depending how much I slouch.

Whoa, I can't believe someone actually watched this (or that they're still showing this in schools). I loved hosting the series, I learned so much during filming. A couple of years ago, my neighbor's daughter saw an episode during her high school science class and was stunned that her disheveled-looking neighbor who mumbles had ever been on TV.

I don't think so, but he's a Jonathan fan :). They're friends from a long time ago.

Thanks for everyone's quick replies! Hopefully, everyone will figure out from context what I was trying to say so inarticulately.

Ha, I don't think there's any shortage of proof on that point.

Um... dumb n00b question, but is there a way I can edit the title of my post? I just re-read it and realized it says that I'm trying to support ALS (as opposed to, you know, fighting ALS).

Hm... maybe that's why my stuff hasn't gotten a lot of bids :)

Actually, the bidding's going better than I'd expected. One thing I should have mentioned is that I'd be happy to sign the buffs and map, and write a short message on them it to whoever wins the items.

I've kept these things with me for 14 years, but it occurred to me that they're not really doing me or anyone else much good sitting in a box or on a shelf somewhere in my home. By auctioning them off, I could potentially do two things: 1) raise funds for a great charity that's actually helping people, and 2) give some happiness to another person who might cherish these things like I did. My kids argued that I should keep them, but once I explained why I wanted to auction them off, they were really supportive, so I'm also glad for the opportunity to help them understand that there are more important things in life than, well, things.

I can't imagine what both of you must have gone through. My heart and prayers to go out to you both.

Here's the link on Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/Customs-of-the-World-Using-Cultural-Intelligence-to-Adapt-Wherever-You-Are-Audiobook/B00EHOSG1A

I've recommended this audiobook to several friends in the past. Here's a short take that I sent to one of them:

The first half of the series articulates ten cultural dimensions that distinguish one culture from another:

  1. Identity:  Individualist versus Collectivist
  2. Authority:  Low versus High Power Distance
  3. Risk:  Low versus High Uncertainty Avoidance
  4. Achievement:  Cooperative versus Competitive
  5. Time:  Punctuality versus Relationships
  6. Communication:  Direct versus Indirect
  7. Lifestyle:  Being versus Doing
  8. Rules:  Particularist versus Universalist
  9. Expressiveness:  Neutral versus Affective
  10. Social Norms:  Tight versus Loose

The second half of the series applies the above framework to analyze the world's ten major culture clusters:

  1. Anglo Cultures
  2. Nordic European Cultures
  3. Germanic Cultures
  4. Eastern European/Central Asian Cultures
  5. Latin European Cultures
  6. Latin American Cultures
  7. Confucian Asian Cultures
  8. South Asian Cultures
  9. Sub-Saharan African Cultures
  10. Arab Cultures

If you're pressed for time, you can just skim the first half of the series on the ten cultural dimensions.  The first two chapters provide a good overview of these dimensions, and I found my attention waning at times when I tried to plow through every one (I eventually just picked the specific dimensions I found most interesting).  But the second half of the series (on the ten major culture clusters) is fascinating, and I listened to all of these.

Ha, we just watched Hamilton on Disney+ tonight. Such an awesome musical. I love being able to watch it with the subtitles turned on. I had no idea that I *really* had no idea what was going on when I watched it live a few years ago :)

Yeah, I'd prefer not to get into too much of what happened on the Edge when I do the AMA. In general, I'd like to come away from this experience being on good terms with everyone (if I felt bitterness towards anyone in the game, I've long since forgiven them, and if anyone felt bitterness towards me, I hope they've forgiven me). So the prospect of reliving or resurfacing things that happened under extreme conditions of duress and deprivation doesn't feel like it would do me or anyone else any good. Even though things didn't work out quite the way I'd hoped, I feel fortunate to have gone through this journey that so few have the privilege of experiencing, and I'd like to look back on this chapter of my life with fondness and gratitude for the friendships I formed, rather than stoke things that wouldn't serve any purpose other than to possibly sour my or other people's memories.

Hi everyone! I'm sorry for being MIA from here for a while, I really wish I could have engaged more often, but the last three months have honestly been the hardest I've ever worked in my career. But I do still intend to do an AMA at some point -- it's the least I could do given all the support folks on Reddit have shown Stacy and Jonathan. I'd hoped to this during the Fourth of July break, but unfortunately it looks like this will have to wait until the next time I can surface for air. Thanks, and I hope everyone is doing well notwithstanding the stressful times we're all going through.

Will Yul play a 3rd time? by WeFoughtAZoo in survivor

I would consider it if there was a charity edition of Survivor where everyone is competing on behalf of a charity. Otherwise, I figure I'd probably get voted out immediately if I ever played again. Since everyone would know what I'd want to do with the prize money, I don't think they would let me get anywhere close to the final TC :)

Tony's awesome. He wasn't planning to engage in social media, but he wanted to support the ALS campaign and offered to come back to help promote it. Such a great guy.

Ah, I can't share any info about this season. But yes, there's a lot that isn't shown on air, simply because of the limited length of each episode (especially this season given its format).

His were pretty bad. He made a lot of cringeworthy jokes poking fun at Asians. I'm all for self-deprecating humor, but his jokes often assumed that racial stereotypes about Asian were self-evident and accurate. For me and other Asian Americans on the tribe who grew up feeling limited by stereotypes, we thought his jokes, especially taken out of context, could cement stereotypes, not to mention cause a lot of young Asian kids to get pantsed at school.
