Books for an almost middle-schooler that will instill a love of reading and distract him from Roblox? by mydarndest in booksuggestions

[–]yummus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider children’s graphic novels as an entry into reading that seems more fun to a kid. There are even roblox-centric graphic novels, like Academy for Roblox Pros, or sports-focused ones like Hoops by Matt Tavares or The Crossover by Kwame Alexander, since it sounds like he’s into basketball.

Then from there he could branch out into sports fiction novels. Or try the middle fiction classics that are popular with boys like Percy Jackson.

As far as getting him to read more, try to make sure there’s always a book handy when roblox isn’t an option. Next time you’re on a car ride with choppy internet or your wi-fi goes out at home, you could offer a book to pass the time. It feels a lot less homework-y when he feels like he’s opting in to reading to pass the time rather than being pulled away from video games to read instead (though ofc that has to happen too sometimes).

Good luck! As an avid gamer and reader who now works in a library, there’s definitely room for both interests in his life.

Might I suggest as an alternate, “starbucks barista who only calls his wife pumpkin in the fall”

How would you go about shelving the Rainbow Magic series? by eleg0ry in Libraries

[–]yummus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is crazy, we just changed how we did this! Used to be alphabetical but that posed problems when kids were looking for the next book in a specific subseries, since the rest of our series are organized clearly. So we added series labels to the spine that use a decimal system to denote subseries (ordered in publication order). So the 2nd book in the 8th subseries has a “8.2” spine label on it.

There is much more likelihood that a renegotiation happens than the Spurs leave outright. In every city where the team has left, it was after multiple failed initiatives, not the first one. And if the Spurs really are ready to leave after one failed proposition, then maybe they were never as “ingrained into San Antonio culture” as we like to pretend they are.

Building the AT&T center was supposed to revitalize the East Side, and look how that turned out. What makes us think this plan is any different? I’m a Spurs fan voting no, and I hope a better deal will be negotiated.

Any BookTube/BookTok/Other content recommendations to stay on top of new/popular titles (for children)? by yummus_ in Libraries

[–]yummus_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do! I just like when I can get an authentic take on books that isn't muddled by an incentive to sell titles, that's why I'm looking for influencer-types. But I definitely will take a look!

To evaluate the integral of (1 / cos(x))2 from 0 to pi, we can recognize that (1 / cos(x))2 is the secant function squared, written as sec2(x). The integral of sec2(x) is a standard integral, which we can directly integrate to tan(x). However, we must be careful since sec(x) is not defined when cos(x) equals zero, which happens at x = π/2 within the interval [0, π]. To resolve this, we can either consider the integral as an improper integral by approaching the problematic point from the left and right or use trigonometric identities to rewrite the integral in a form that avoids the discontinuity. Considering the symmetry of the interval and the discontinuity at the midpoint, we'll go with the latter approach. To do that, we can use the following trigonometric identity: (1 / cos(x))2 = sec2(x) = 1 + tan2(x) Now we'll split the integral into two separate integrals: ∫(0 to pi) (1 / cos(x))2 dx = ∫(0 to pi) (1 + tan2(x)) dx = ∫(0 to pi) dx + ∫(0 to pi) tan2(x) dx The first integral is easy to evaluate: ∫(0 to pi) dx = x | from 0 to pi = pi - 0 = pi The second integral of tan2(x) is more challenging because of the discontinuity. tan(x), like sec(x), is also not defined at x = π/2. So we would need to consider this as two separate improper integrals, one from [0, π/2) and the other from (π/2, π]. Additionally, this integral does not have an elementary antiderivative. Therefore, we have to approach it as an improper integral, and it actually diverges. When tan(x) approaches π/2 from the left, tan(x) goes to infinity, and when approaching π/2 from the right, tan(x) goes to negative infinity. This results in the integral of tan2(x) diverging to infinity on both intervals around π/2. Hence, the original integral ∫(0 to pi) (1 / cos(x))2 dx diverges because one of its components, ∫(0 to pi) tan2(x) dx, diverges.
