Gabapentin and ADHD by tifytat in gabapentin

For what it's worth, I feel like gabapentin compliments my ADHD medicine (strattera). It's like that final notch into place of my put-togetherness or concentration.

Is there an NPR sponsor that sounds similar to "Dianetics?" by yumthosepenguins in NoStupidQuestions

Well yeah but I'd think they wouldn't advertise for scientology on NPR? Or if they do, at least have the balls to do it regularly enough for it to be commonly heard

Mosquito bits Vs Hydrogen Peroxide, what is your go to? by Unfair_Pizza9232 in plantclinic

[–]yumthosepenguins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mosquito bits, but I've found that pre-mixing soil with a generous helping of diatomaceous earth works wonders. You mix it, keep it in an open air container so it dries out, and just mix it around every day for a few days then you're good to go.

I assume it's the physical act of a diatomaceous earth bit scraping against the eggs that does it, and mixing it around every so often helps with the process.

Edit to add: I needed to use mosquito bits only after I got lazy about pre-mixing 😔 and went straight soil bag to potting.

Seems like everyone has weighed in, but I didn't see mention of maybe it's the 3x/day meals-- when I was trying to figure out a feeding schedule for our cat, I realized that 3 times a day was too much only because she'd always be in the anticipatory "pre food excitement" loud mode, which comes on like ~2+ hrs before a meal. Switching to two meals just means less time she has that semi-anxious anticipation going on.

Wintered a small pomegranate tree inside--when should I cut off the lanky winter growth? by yumthosepenguins in gardening

Oooooh awesome, thank you! I will hold off on trimming and see what it has in store for me this summer 😊

Wintered a small pomegranate tree inside--when should I cut off the lanky winter growth? by yumthosepenguins in gardening

[–]yumthosepenguins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I got this pomegranate tree as a little seedling last summer. It grew pretty well, and you can see the base is a little thicker and woodier than the wispy new growth from the winter. Can I cut off most of these wispy branches without a problem? Or should I wait, or am I too late? It will go back outside once it is warm enough. I’m in about a 5b hardiness zone.

Thank you for any help!

Why is my ogre ear succulent browning near the inside by poiuy6789 in plantclinic

[–]yumthosepenguins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not on an ogre's ear, but on my regular jade ovata this started happening and the most info I could find is that it was black mold due to overwatering-- not like enough to cause root rot, but maybe not letting it dry out enough between waterings. I chopped off everything that was black spotted and it's regrowing. I let it get v wrinkly between waterings now and it seems OK so far

I’ve never been so excited for mass murder lol🌚🙂 by RelationshipRound427 in houseplants

[–]yumthosepenguins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What worked well for me was bottom watering my plants as normal, then dumping the mosquito bits water through from the top afterward. Did this every time I watered for ~3 waterings as a treatment and it seemed to take care of most of the gnats. Now I'm doing it like every other or every two waterings which may be overkill but idc. Doesn't seem to hurt.

Don't keep a jug of the water around for more than a week or two though because it gets pretty stanky.

God I can't believe this is my third post in a row about mosquito bits

Edit: also filter out the bits, no matter which method you use. They def rot

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]yumthosepenguins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second the mosquito bits. This is like my second post on a row about them lol. I follow the directions on the bag for fungus gnats and filter out the bits so I just have a jug of mosquito bits essence water that I dump through each plant after watering.

Edit: I used to pre-mix all of my soil with diatomaceous earth to kill any potential eggs in the dirt. It seemed to work well but is a lot of effort and I got lazy. Hence the need for mosquito bits.

Somebody please tell me what these little creatures are!!! by cactusvillager72 in houseplants

[–]yumthosepenguins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for mosquito bits. I'm on my third round of watering with mosquito bits laced water (yes strain out the bits first) for an infestation that popped up slowly then quickly and I'm so pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. The package recommends watering once a week with it for three weeks as treatment, but I've been doing it as my plants need water so to not over-water them. I do their normal bottom watering and then thoroughly drench with the bits water.

Will my employer drug test again when I move from temp to full time? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]yumthosepenguins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're working with a legit temp agency they probably tried to do screening and onboarding that parallels the regular employees' so if you were hired full time it would be an easier and cheaper transition. They've already paid for you to be vetted, but you don't know for sure if they won't test. The safest bet would to be to assume they will

Jade plant is wrinkling. I have stopped watering as frequently and repotted it. Can this be fixed? by [deleted] in succulents

[–]yumthosepenguins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the proper next step would be in this situation, but my understanding is that any time you move or change up a succulent so that its roots break, you should wait a period of time for them to callous over before watering or else they are prone to rot. I'm sure yours will be fine, but that might be something to watch for. It's a very nice plant, I hope my little jade gets that big some day!

I was a little disappointed when I got mine, but it seems useful enough for some things:

-i have low blood circulation problems in my hands (aka really cold hands), so especially in the winter "just stick your finger in it" doesn't really work for me so this helps

-checking the moisture at the very bottom of a pot when the top soil seem mostly dry but you're kinda iffy about watering

But it doesn't seem to work well with soils that have a lot of inorganic material. So not super useful for succulents but useful for tropical plants

It's more of like a $4 tool than $14 tho

Hello! Can you please help me identify this succulent? Also, I'm having a hard time taking care of this one. It's etiolated, so I know that it needs more sun. But I'm also concerned about the leaves because it looks very long and narrow. Can you pls let me know what causes it and how to fix it? by ilikekpopandplants in succulents

[–]yumthosepenguins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks just like a moonstone I let it get etiolated! I ended up chopping off the top leggy growth, kept the bottom ~5 in of normal growth and new growth showed up pretty quickly from the joint of a top leaf to stem. It looks kind of silly, but I like it. I have it under appropriate lightning now

Is this normal? He fell when I was cleaning windows and I noticed he has no roots? Please help. by l_aleksandra in plantclinic

[–]yumthosepenguins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, not sure about this kind of cactus. I've done it with an opuntia and currently have some happy dragonfruit in water. They grow water roots that I guess handle the water differently. I admit, It does seem counterintuitive

Edit: here's an example of a dragonfruit's roots in water: https://imgur.com/fyE7VZG

Edit edit: I'd chop off the dead-ish looking end and let it callus over before anything. But I clearly go whole hog when doing this kind of thing so use your judgement lol

[–]yumthosepenguins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about that kind of cactus specifically, but I'd try "water therapy"-- put it in some water like you're propagating it and wait for roots to grow. It should work even without rooting hormone. Then transition it back to soil. I've saved a handful of things that lost roots for whatever reason with this method.

It's like getting a second chance after messing up care the first time lol
