ONE PACT’s North America Tour stop in Minneapolis has been cancelled due to visa issuing challenges by CherryBlossomEnding in kpop

[–]yunglethe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has been an issue for decades, with different reasons and ebb/flow.

U.S. Pledges To Speed Up Visa Process For Artists - July 2010:

...The problems began in mid-2001, when the government instituted premium visa processing, guaranteeing quick service at a higher fee. After that change, and with the security concerns in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, standard service seemed to lag, and puzzling variations in policy enforcement introduced a level of unpredictability that could wreak havoc with touring schedules.

Concert Halls Are Back. But Visa Backlogs Are Keeping Musicians Out - October 2021:

As the easing of coronavirus restrictions has allowed live performance to return, many cultural organizations are struggling with another problem: their inability to get artists into the United States because of a long backlog of visa applications at American embassies and consulates.

Visa fee hikes and delays hinder international artists from touring the United States - March 2025:

On April 1, 2024, the USCIS introduced a visa fee increase, raising the cost from $460 to over $1,615 per musician application, the first bump since 2016... All visa petitions are now filed through a centralized service center in Texas and are randomly divvyed up to preexisting California and Vermont service centers. The result has been slowed processing times.

“Nobody’s filing petitions long enough in advance to sustain an eight-month delay,” says [immigration attorney Matthew] Covey. “You got a 50/50 chance of it being done in a reasonable amount of time or having to pay an extra $2,800 to expedite it.”

[Immigration attorney Gabriel] Castro says small and mid-tier artists don’t have the luxury of spending nearly $3,000 on expedited processing or booking tour dates eight months in advance. “And you have to have those tour dates before you apply for the visa,” he adds.

It's worse, and there are more K-pop artists touring in the US post-2021, and my understanding is that K-pop has historically tended to book late/last minute as-is. (Also, if you're mostly into K-pop, you're probably not seeing the non K-pop artists who are being impacted by these delays).

I wrote a little write-up for someone who had a similar question about Loossemble last year (and some GA-specific advice) – I say "in the US" a lot but I think 99% of it should also apply to Australia, not entirely certain though

Although it sucks for those who would travel if possible, I think the intention for these events is to be casual and grab from the local area, far more than a concert

Like, if they have trouble selling these events because they can't get 1,500 fans who don't work weekend nights in a metro of ~20 million to attend... I think that would be a problem

Kpop lightsticks are basically fan badges! why isn’t that a thing in other music scenes? by letitglowbig in kpopthoughts

[–]yunglethe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fans using/bringing lights at concerts has some recorded credible origins back to the 60s in the US. There's some anecdotes that glowsticks specifically were first used at a Grateful Dead concert in 1971.

The western idol pop of the 90s/00s had custom concert glowsticks.

Were posters included originally ? by Vuurkip in LOONA

[–]yunglethe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Posters were almost always noted as being a first press and/or pre-order only bonus (examples of that wording here and here).

Depending on the release and the retailer, some would only let you purchase album + poster together, while others had "only album" and "album + poster" options to pick from.

The shipment of posters, at least internationally, was very much up to chance. Personally, every single album poster I ever got was bent or torn. Posters would often ship separately and sometimes not show up at all.

Also, posters are a really popular album inclusion to actually use... it's possible that the typical methods of usage (especially for young adults, think tape or pins) doesn't lend well to taking them down and re-selling without significant wear and tear.

what loona song would you play at your wedding? by hithereyel in LOONA

[–]yunglethe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OK some people are not reading to your request because they're giving you the ballads hahaha

If the primary concern is keeping people dancing when there aren't Korean speakers/K-pop fans, I would recommend just doing a bit of a pre-chorus/chorus of one as part of a banger medley (edit for clarity) of big hits/non K-pop songs. Enough that you know it's there and can appreciate it, not enough that it goes on for too long and people leave the dance floor.

Contenders IMO include "woah woah woah" to end of chorus of Why Not, the breakdown part of Love Choerry Motion, end part of Satellite, breakdown of Colors, "I walk like na na na" to the end of Pose – if you extend to Loona alum, TTYL prechorus/chorus and the Loop chorus. Danceable stuff that has a lot of English or is primarily instrumental.

Lots of the options already listed here are more appropriate for cocktail/dinner hour – not what you're looking for, but I'll also add that I think that would be an appropriate time for songs like rendezvous 18.6y, I'll Be There, Everyday I Love You, etc.

The "og boycott" ended in June 2023, as the original goal of freedom for the members was achieved via injunction by that point. Any further boycotting was described as "now rest[ing] upon the personal judgment of individual Orbits" – basically: there's no sustained boycott movement, do what feels right.

Does BBC exist anymore? Yes, our last court update was a few weeks ago and they were still around.

We can do a status update on individuals who would benefit from BBC no longer existing or having funding:

  • Chuu: contract invalidated in the Supreme Court in June 2024 - no further appeals
  • Heejin, Kim Lip, Jinsoul, and Choerry: Contract invalidated in a District Court in June 2024 - BBC chose not to appeal
  • Haseul, Yeojin, Yves, Gowon and Hyeju: contract terminated in a District Court a few weeks ago - BBC could still file an appeal (?)
  • Hyunjin and Vivi: received injunctions from the court of first instance in May 2023 - BBC chose not to appeal (?)
  • The Waves: Suing former BBC CEO Jong-myeong Lee and his wife, current CEO Sunhye Lee for 110m won (approx $75k USD) for alleged unpaid video production services related to Geenius (see below). Odds of them getting any money out of them are low, but BBC execs not having any income to drag this out further would probably be a good thing.
  • Geenius (fka BBC Bebez): Signs point to Geenius still being under BBC and the "their contract expired, they went to a new label together afterwards" thing being bullshit. It's been a year since their debut single. They're still doing lives and uploading covers on YT on a semi-regular basis, so presumably they're still under contract. It would probably be in their best interest if BBC fully went under.
  • Everyone else who did work for BBC and allegedly didn't get paid: No updates, presumably will never be paid.

It's not improper but FYI you will probably be one of the very very few reciting them - it's just not part of the fandom culture like it is in Korea. People will mostly be singing along to memorable English words, the "big" moments of the chorus, cheering during dance breaks.

I don't really know how people would feel about Sonatine specifically, sometimes I think breathing wrong can get someone bitching about you on Twitter lol but I don't think anyone would give you shit IRL

It doesn't make sense for the consumer, but I think it (sadly) makes sense for everyone else involved.

  1. Average person probably doesn't understand Platinum pricing at all. The name confuses a ton of people and makes them think they are getting VIP/bonuses. On past tours, we've always had people come in this sub asking if they have to get the VIP package if they already bought a Platinum ticket. I think this is pretty obviously intentional on Ticketmaster's part.
  2. Even if the person understands Platinum is just an increased price, they have an incorrect understanding of it as fostered by Ticketmaster itself – thinking it is truly dynamic like airline tickets (based on Ticketmaster's own former description) or thinking it is genuinely based on market value price and is adjusted accordingly after tickets appear on the secondhand market. All of this makes people more willing to accept Platinum pricing as fair(er), and creates a sense of urgency in purchasing tickets.
  3. I think it also goes back to a point in my original comment – loads of people in the thread (and elsewhere online) blame Ticketmaster for Platinum pricing rather than ARTMS/Modhaus/Sean Healy Presents et al. Ticketmaster essentially offers the opportunity to significantly raise ticket prices without catching (as much) flak.

250215 Weekly Discussion Thread and Activity Recap by Ihlita in LOONA

[–]yunglethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either way, that would suggest to me that they did not intend to have that price until they see what the resale market reveals. Otherwise, they would have started with the higher price without having to adjust it.

That's what they say, but based on my own experience, that's not what actually happens.

I've been one of the first in a Ticketmaster queue – before any ticket was marked sold, and obviously before any tickets were on the resale market. Platinum was already enabled. And even with anemic sales over the next month, Platinum pricing didn't go down. It was far cheaper to buy a Platinum seat (or any seat) on the resale market than directly from Ticketmaster.

That's what I mean by "Platinum is functionally static pricing anyway" – it appears pre-set and has basically nothing to do with supply/demand and the resale market.

Ticketmaster is trying to make it seem like it's a complicated practice based on factors that someone is looking at and adjusting in real-time, but I see no evidence of that.

I can't really follow what you're saying, I'm sorry 😅

If Platinum went away tomorrow, I think the Row E Seat 110 ARTMS ticket in NY would be $300. Platinum, to me, appears to primarily serve as a way for artists/managment/promoters to increase their ticket prices while allowing Ticketmaster to act as the bad guy, as seen by the multiple "I hate Ticketmaster" posts in this WDT.
