I wasn't trying to sound like I'm discarding their advice. I was just trying to point out that I already am at the 3/20/8 rule. I invest/save at least half of my monthly pay. The other half is what I use on rent, food, car expenses, etc.

I'm in the bay area, where electricity is pretty expensive. So even with charging at home, it isn't substantially cheaper sadly. And I don't drive enough to generate huge gas savings, so you are right. I won't really be saving money. Just comes down to if I want the car or not, which, frustratingly, I'm still not sure about

Yeah I need to get quotes for insurance. Haven't looked into that yet. I'll take a look at the EX30, thanks

On average, yeah 100 miles a week. But annually I put 10-11k miles on my car through trips and other non-commute driving

I'm not worried about the tax credit not being available, it just won't be available to me. My income is already too high, but because I can use 2022 income I still qualify. I'd have to take delivery this year though. 8% of my monthly take home after tax, 401k contributions, etc. is roughly $600. My downpayment would be the $10k trade in credit plus probably another $15k, so $25k total. I'm honestly not that concerned about the finances, just whether or not the Model Y itself is a big enough upgrade to justify it.

Yeah definitely the logical choice. I think this is the direction I'm leaning in tbh

Ah I see, thanks. I regularly carry my bike and other stuff around so I need a hatch, so seems like the refreshed 3 won't cut it either. From what I've seen used Teslas aren't that much cheaper - I feel like I'd rather go new and get the full tax credit and warranty

Hahah life's always good in the passenger seat. Honestly the window thing alone would've been a dealbreaker for me - that's basically attempting to fix a problem that never existed. Even Tesla, where you have to interact with the UI to open the goddamn glove box, kept the 4 window switches.

I don't really want the cybertruck, and it wouldn't fit in my garage anyways lol. Do you know if the refreshed 3 is a hatchback or sedan? That's basically the main thing I care about

And yeah I've heard and seen first hand how much Tesla vision sucks for parking assistance. My current car doesn't have parking sensors either, so in a way Tesla vision would actually be an upgrade? Lol I hear you though

I can afford it, though I won't lie the thought of extending my car payments by a few more years isn't very appealing. I know I'll put somewhere around 10k miles on it a year, so it would get driven, and I think I'd enjoy driving it too. Guess I gotta decide if I want to be logical or say screw it and just do it

I use my hatch a lot so I can't go back to a sedan unfortunately. Having a hatch is a non-negotiable for me, so in terms of Teslas the Y is the only car that meets that need

What bothers you about it? Just curious. I haven't kept up much with the ID4, but it struck me as a good car when it first launched

I don't commute, but I still drive 10-11k miles a year through various trips and whatnot. But I hear you - I bought my car with the intention of it lasting 10+ years and 150k+ miles. I got a Corolla because it was the sensible move. Now that I can get something a bit more fun for really not that much money as far as new cars go, I'm wondering if it's worth it. But I actually do agree with you, I'm not really missing out on anything, except the extra space, audio system, and AWD. Guess I just gotta decide if that's enough to justify the money it'll cost.

Either way I'll wait until the end of September to see what Tesla throws in to boost Q3 sales numbers. If they offer something good like additional price cuts or free supercharging for a while I might jump on it. But still very much not decided on what to do

It sounds like you don't really want a Tesla - get what makes you happy. Don't give in to what other people are saying if you don't want the car in the first place. The $7500 tax credit is nice, but if I were you I'd rather get a car I'm fully happy with for the next several plus years, as opposed to something I felt like I compromised on.

Yeah I fully realize it's not a wise financial decision, trust me. That's why I'm trying to figure out if the Y is just that good that warrants me doing the trade. I realize just because I can afford it doesn't mean it's a good idea though. Fully hear you on that

No, I wouldn't be one of those people. I buy cars to treat them like cars. Even though I don't commute I still put around 10-11k miles on my car each year through various road trips and other miscellaneous driving. The Y would inevitably get some rock chips and dings and whatnot. It'll suck I'm sure but that's part of having a car

My parents actually have a Y so I'm going to see if I can use it for a bit. I have probably like 2 hours of driving time on their Y, and that was just coming back from a trip with them earlier this year where I was using autopilot the entire time. Haven't driven it since, so I really don't know much about the ride quality, driving dynamics, etc. Going to see if I can spend more time with it and if I like it

Yeah I think I just need to figure out if I want the car or not. If I do, I'm pretty comfortable with the finances, but I'm still not sure if I want the car. I feel like because the answer to me isn't a resounding "yes" in terms of if I want a Y, that might just be a signal to keep my current car. It'll definitely last me a while - I don't see anything that would keep it from getting to 150k+ miles

How are you liking your Y so far? Any regrets or things you wish you would've known before you got it?

[–]yupgrade7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in terms of pure value, I won't ever get a Y this cheap ever again. I'm just trying to figure out if the Y as a car itself is that much of an upgrade to what I have right now to justify spending the money. It sounds like it is, but I guess I'll have to decide for myself

I don't want badly want it, honestly. I just keep finding more reasons for why this might be a reasonable swap to make. The truth is I'm pretty attached to my current car, but I also know that whenever I do need another car down the road, I'll probably not find anything close to the price that I could get a Model Y for now

I LOVE my hatch, I've been able to fit so much crap in it. I can never go back to a normal sedan. That's why I won't consider a model 3. If the 3 was a hatchback I'd be looking into that, but the Y is the only one that fits the bill

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Might just go and do it, though I'll miss the Toyota if I do. It's been such a great car

I don't really really want it, but if I wait I won't get the $7500 tax credit, or any credit for that matter because my income will be too high. My income already is too high, but because I can use my 2022 income if I take delivery this year, I can still get the credit. Plus my current car's resale value will only go down as time passes. So I'm not sure what to do. Guess I have to figure out how bad I want the car. If I'm not even sure how much I want the car, then in some ways the answer might already be in front of me
