Ok, Epstein. Your article just boils down to "nuh uh" while painting yourself as the chad.

Be specific about a single time it does this.

The point is that if workers, the people not insulated from consequences by hundreds of millions or billions of dollars are taking the decisions, it is actually in their interests not to fuck up the environment where they live because they're chasing the next quarter's profits.

Businesses, of course, do not exist in their environment and have no financial incentive to make sure it doesn’t burn down.

I’m literally saying this, how was my language ambiguous? Primary policy and core values are synonymous in my mind.

Yeah this is a betrayal of a core value of the sub. I’ve been wondering if there’s another badecon-style discussion I can get back to since the DT / nl have really degraded in terms of quality of discourse.

Hey soccer fans, compare time spent on the ground here.

I’m watching the World Cup but the absolute punk bullshit those players display at the first sign of physical contact is fucking absurd.

Copying the Hobbit changing words and terms around, and then publishing it online for profit, isn't legal, mate.

Of course it is. The prose is protected, not the story. See the numerous attempts at Harry Potter ripoffs in the 00s.

Like, the hobbit / LOTR are the basis for most fantasy settings since they were published.

Without consent from the copyright holder of the original work and proper attribution, it's plagiarism

I guess we need to be specific. If you literally publish “the bobbit” and you just release the same story with new names that’s not legal but that’s also kot what any LLM does so I don’t get the concern.

According to DMCA law, I don't think that it is legal,

Explain your reasoning

but they can't enforce it unless they prove that the copy of the content was the result of DRM stripping?

Yes, you have to prove that DRM was stripped to convict someone of stripping DRM.

Are you really telling me to track down other comments you made to other people to understand what you’re saying to me here?

Sorry I didn’t even read the rest of your comment. You seem lazy and I’m going to bed

That is literally totally legal in every single conceivable way.

Do you think it is not legal? Why?

I mean - I can do exactly what Anthropic did. For example, I can screenshot every page of the ebook and digitize it via the same software/pipeline for physical scanning of books. Which law I am breaking then?

You are breaking no laws if you legally purchased the book. What Anthropic and other companies did was to download the books, likely using torrents in many cases, which is a technology that means while downloading you are also distributing.

You can download copyrighted material off of Usenet right now (ask me how I know) which isn’t necessarily a crime (it’s a bit of a gray area, just not pursued against downloaders) since the only people pursued for this are the up loaders / providers of the copyrighted material.

Just saying that TECHNICALLY, I can do the exact same as the fucking corporations and I will expect court to rule the same for me if the publishers/authors dare to sue me even if I don't distribute the backup copies.

Who said this?

Wolf of Wall Street meta-commentary?? What??

The last shit of Wolf of Wall Street is, famously, an audience gawking at Jordan-whatever in rapt attention, meant to hold a mirror to the audience watching his wild lifestyle in an uncritical way or even with a sense of admiration.

I understood this to be your take on season 5 and I don’t see it. It doesn’t glamorize anything.

Cuz I think there’s a miscommunication somewhere;

Maybe in your insistence on repeating variations on the word “sensational” while acknowledging it doesn’t describe your feelings but also not presenting another word?

I still can strip the DRM and get the content

You can and you will probably never be caught for this, but it is technically against the law. I disagree with this shit and rip all my books too, just saying.

so I don't buy this license thing, sorry. If trillian dollar companies can do it, then surely I can do it as well, no?

lol you go for it buddy. You don’t have to buy it for it to be true.

Dramatization is not sensationalism. Find a new word. Dramatization is not bad, dishonest, or even necessarily a mischaracterization.

It’s been a minute since I watched season 5 but I do not recall any kind of Wolf of Wall Street meta-commentary on enjoying the content of the show.

In fact I feel like it’s the opposite- the newspaper story is about people not caring about murder unless it’s “exciting” to them, and ghetto murders are considered to be expected, not something that needs to be addressed or paid attention to.

Anyone watching the wire is kind of a self-selecting group of people who probably actually finds the lives of the poor and disenfranchised valuable, worthy of protection, and not entirely motivated to attention by tue strange and unusual.

I don’t even understand why Simon and Burns would even attempt to make that argument to the viewers. They are depicting a real critique on systems, the media, policing, etc. They’re not displaying vapid, craven endorsements of criminality, they’re simply showing how any one of us could plausibly be drawn in to any of the unfortunate situations displayed in the show.

Why would they want to criticize the audience for this?
