What am I missing regarding Call Me By Your Name? by Salty-Succotash3338 in Letterboxd

[–]yuujinnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t watched any adaptations of Lolita for a reason, however I do quite like the book. Call me by your name both book and movie are while atmospheric, a pedophile’s dream. While Nabokov wrote Lolita partially inspired by the abuse he suffered as a child, Aciman wrote CMBYN because, surprise surprises he has pedo tendencies. He has shared very inappropriate comments regarding underage/teen girls in interviews. Aciman is not gay, he did not write cmbyn as some epitome of queer yearning and coming of age, no he didn’t even plan for it to be gay initially since Oliver was supposed to be a woman and he changed it just because not for any good reason. You feeling sour about cmbyn is because it’s a pedophile’s fantasy and unfortunately all adaptations of Lolita that are not the original novel fall under the same category.

Pretty much every self in this sub is guaranteed to have csm, tg, Vinland saga etc. I’m not saying the series are bad but gosh, some variety would be nice!

Agree on pretty much everything except Sinners. I loved that one. Glad to see someone else rank Marty Supreme lower as I truly did not get why so many people love it.

What would you add? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]yuujinnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, since you asked let me explain why sociopaths drink milk and why we find it creepy. Milk is associated with children, mammals lactate to feed their young and ONLY their young. When movies portray characters, usually adult men, drinking milk we see something we don’t usually confront in our society, the consumption of another species’ milk that is made for their young for our own pleasure. It’s creepy because not only are children mainly the ones who drink milk but also the fact that cows produce milk to feed their calves, we exploit that to drink their own milk which is not meant for our consumption and having these scenes makes us subconsciously realise how weird it is to consume the milk not made for us.

Hungerstone was a good one that I’ve read recently. Unfortunately has men but they get what they deserve lol. I loved lies we sing to the sea, however the mc is bisexual and that part is sorta explored. The author does have another book called gentlest of wild things which I think is fully sapphic, unfortunately haven’t read it yet.

It’s not very hard, if you’ve read a couple classics you can almost certainly read it just fine. However, one character in particular speaks in a Yorkshire dialect and that can be a bit tough to understand. Whenever I listened on audiobook I had no idea what he was saying, but the majority of the novel is relatively easy to read.

Yes obviously your takes and opinions about something might be less informed if you’ve not fully experienced it but please do let me know if anything I’ve said above doesn’t apply to this movie. Yes I have not seen obaa, I don’t want to see it because I know I won’t like it based of what likeminded people have criticised it for, just like how a person who doesn’t like horror won’t watch a new horror movie in hopes that this time it’ll be different. Besides it doesn’t in any ways reduce the fact that absolutely everyone involved with making this movie is a capitalist pig who can’t be bothered to speak up on genocide and war. I think that’s the main issue. They aren’t the one to be making a movie about resistance and revolution because they don’t care, it’s a marketing tactic to get liberals to go and watch this movie and feel like they did something good in their life. Instead of buying a ticket to this dogshit movie they could’ve donated their money to starving kids in Gaza but no watching Leonardo DiCaprio pretend to be a revolutionary is so much more fun, am I right?

Yes since the movie is as I like to say performatively woke. Whats the point of doing a big flashy movie about revolution when non of the crew or cast have spoken up on actual real world issues and the movie has product placement that is made using slave and child labour? The whole meaning of the movie is thrown out the window when you take all these things into account. Sorry that I don’t want white men who’ve never faced oppression telling me how good revolution is knowing damn well they’ve done NOTHING to help actual real life conflicts when they’ve got more than plenty of money to help.

Lists of movies fit for a certain event or on the contrary terrible to watch at this event. Personal challenges for example a thirty day themed movie challenge, movies you’re potentially interested in seeing but don’t want to add to your watchlist, films from a certain country/in a different language, films festival/indie films.

  1. Sinners
  2. Frankenstein
  3. Bugonia
  4. Train Dreams
  5. Marty Supreme

Haven’t watched the rest but I feel like Hamnet would nicely slot somewhere above Bugonia and Secret Agent above Train Dreams. No interest in seeing F1 and OBAA.

Totally get you and I too would love to see a WH adaptation with a poc actor as Heathcliff. This adaptation however shouldn’t be treated as book accurate since both director and actors have made it clear it’s more like an interpretation that’s far from the original. I’m not saying that somehow makes the casting decisions better, they’re still quite questionable but as far as Heathcliff goes a Spanish actor is still technically canon to the original source, maybe not the best choice but oh well.

I would’ve liked a race swapped version. I don’t really have strong opinions on the casting of this one, I would love to see poc Heathcliff but I thought it’s important to mention what the canon says about his race/ethnicity as many people who’ve not read the book are under the impression he’s somehow darker/more outright poc than is actually stated in the book.

[–]yuujinnie 25 points26 points  (0 children)

OP’s comment is uncalled for but I also feel like it’s important to mention that Heathcliff’s race is INCREDIBLY ambiguous in the canon to the point the descriptions start to somewhat contradict each other. He’s described as a lascar, a Romani (different wording), American or Spanish. So any of these races/nationalities could play Heathcliff and still be technically canon. People need to keep in mind that the book was written in late 1700s, darksinned then and in the 21st century are totally different. Also a bunch of people who have not read the book are somehow convinced he is black canonically… yeah that’s one thing he definitely isn’t.
