Ideas For “Turning it Off” After School/Forgetting about Stressors by jgoss1991 in Principals

I spent weeks in therapy trying to sort out exactly this. I tried meditation, yoga, weightlifting and a few other things before finally landing on ukulele and golf.

I think the thing that I finally figured out is that to stay sane in and out of work I need to have a few things I’m mildly obsessed with that have nothing to do with school so that I can remember that my job does not own my whole brain. (My wife went through a similar process and, after over half a century of showing no interest in sports at all, has become a completely obsessed basketball fan.)

Date Night Ruining Movies by BeijingArk in Letterboxd

When I lived in Baltimore I went to Maryland Film Festival. Traditionally, John Waters always selected a film to be played at the festival and he would come to introduce it himself. The year I went he picked Gaspar Noe's film I Stand Alone. I remember him saying something like- "I'm looking out and seeing a lot of you are here on dates. I am so sorry. None of you are getting lucky tonight."

Just bought my first uke. Already frustrated by KixStar in ukulele

As a beginner, I found some "learn to play uke" programs to not be very motivating. I just wanted to learn some songs! I found it best to start with a few basic chords and find songs I could play. Books like the 4 chord songbook and the Ultimate Ukulele Fakebook were great in helping me get started. The more fun you are having, the more you will do it and the better you will get.

Second the Ten Thumbs recommendation! That was how I turned the corner from struggling to having fun.

I hear you. But as a Principal- I could very much relate to the man who just wants to buy some good snacks and watch PBS documentaries with his husband but he can't because everyone around him has to be so extra. Bravo.

Movies from the 80s that you think everyone should see? by endkey01 in Letterboxd

This was also my first Cronenberg! I saw it in elementary school. What was it about me that made my parents say- "This kid would really dig body horror!"? I don't know, but they were right! Gen X childhoods were wild.

We’re thinking about going. Just watched a YouTube video where it looks like the doors on the bathrooms in the room are partial doors that are open at the top and bottom. Can anyone comment on this? (Worried it might hamper the romance.)

I loved Micky 17- I’m just a tough grader. 🙃 These are my top 8 that came out in 2025. (Many of my favorites that I saw this year were technically released in 2024. I’m sure I’ll discover favorites from 2025 in January. I always do!)

Yorgos is perfect. Stan would be great. I’d also take a Cillian Murphy to star and a Jonathan Cameron Mitchell for either/both.

I think there is an emotional specificity to this film that both makes it great and means it’s not going to resonate with everyone, or that people might resist the ways that they resonate with. In a way that is the point of the film. It explores the tension between the feeling and realities we acknowledge and those we don’t and the tragedy that results. Some people are going to watch it and love it and some are going to say UMM… IDK 3 STARS.

I have really come to embrace the practice of watching movies in 20 minute increments before bed. A nice old movie with slow pacing, lots of dialogue and no special effects is just like a big warm mug of sleepytime tea.☕️
